Director of the Immigration Law Clinic
Working Title: Director of the Immigration Law Clinic
Position Type: Teaching and Research Faculty
Department: School of Law
Posting Date: 08-08-2017
The University of Virginia School of Law seeks a Director for its Immigration Law Clinic to begin work in the fall semester of 2018.
The purpose of the clinic is to give students direct experience in immigration law advocacy. Working in partnership with the Legal Aid Justice Center, students have multiple clients as well as responsibility for supporting the clinic's broader public service mission, which involves explaining basic rights and available services to walk-ins and the wider community. Each student handles at least one complicated case involving extensive client contact and legal briefing. Clients come from diverse backgrounds, and their cases may involve the DACA deferred action program, T or U visas for victims of trafficking or criminal abuse, or asylum claims, including those based on domestic abuse or so-called gang asylum cases from Central America. Other potential categories of cases include appeals from denials of applications for status, petitions for special immigrant juvenile status, and clients who have cases complicated by past criminal or immigration history.
(For more information about the current clinic offering, see http://content.law.virginia.edu/academics/clinic/immigration-law-clinic.)
The Director will establish the curriculum for the classroom component of the clinic, work with the Legal Aid Justice Center to secure appropriate client engagements to be handled by the clinic, supervise the clinic students' work on those client matters, and evaluate that student work. All of these duties of the Director will be performed within the broader and evolving experiential learning program at the Law School, in coordination with the Dean, Vice-Dean and Director of Clinics.
J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school or foreign equivalent degree required. Candidates must be licensed to practice law in Virginia or become licensed no later than July 2018. Substantial professional experience in the field of immigration law required. Salary and rank are commensurate with experience and qualifications.
