Position Description

Advertised Job Summary

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides continuous and comprehensive services necessary for the promotion of optimal health, prevention and treatment of illness and health maintenance. Patient care is provided under approved guidelines and in collaboration with physicians on the Medical Staff at Student Health Services (SHS). This position provides services primarily in the Women's Care Clinic advancing the medical home model. Assesses, treats, and manages complex patients upon admission to SHS, including family history and physical exam and distinguishes between normal and abnormal findings. Orders diagnostic testing as appropriate and accurately interprets findings. Determines a plan of care and collaborates with physicians, nurses, and all members of the health care team. Writes orders for fluids, medications, treatments and evaluates patient's response to that treatment. Makes changes as indicated. The NP must document patients' medical history, physical assessment results, diagnoses, treatment plans, prescriptions, or outcomes in a timely manner within the electronic health record and follows the guidelines for documentation according to SHS policy.

Minimum Qualifications (Classified and Unclassified positions)

Licensure as a Nurse Practitioner by the South Carolina Board of Nursing and current board certification in specialty area.

Preferred Qualifications

Extensive skill, knowledge, and experience practicing gynecological services. Electronic medical record, accreditation and experience working in a college health or urgent care center are highly preferred.


Knowledge of physical assessment skills for normal and high risk patients. Knowledge of risk screening and developmental assessment tools. Knowledge of the use of specialized equipment used in the care of complex patients. Ability to interpret laboratory findings. Ability to incorporate explanations and health education into the care of high risk patients and their families. Ability to design and conduct nursing research, having an extensive understanding of the research process. Ability to effectively use community resources to facilitate discharge planning for high-risk patients. Thorough knowledge of nursing practice and health care delivery; demonstrated high degree of competence in nursing practice. Must be dependable, punctual and attentive to detail. Sound knowledge and experience with information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat gynecologic problems. Ability to work independently with excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to establish and maintain accurate medical records, reports and statistical data utilizing electronic medical records system. Demonstrate initiative, sensitivity to patient needs, and sound judgment. Will maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and related agencies and professionals. Demonstrates the ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate individual patient care appropriate to the age of patients served by demonstrative knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span. Skill in diagnosis and the therapy needed for treatment of medical conditions. Understands the importance of health and wellness on student's academic success. Knowledge of quality improvement concepts and study designs. Knowledge of principles and processes for providing excellence in customer care including patients, parents, faculty, staff and other internal or external stakeholders. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction. Must be able to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems. Privileging and credentialing must be obtained and maintained as a condition of employment as outlined in the Student Health Services Bylaws.
