Job Description


The Senior Design Engineer is a key member of the ARC engineering team. Using design expertise and project management abilities rooted in solid engineering principles, this engineer will be responsible for the design and development of new product and the support of existing product. He/she will be capable of working independently with only general direction from the Project Engineer. Assignments are broad in scope and highly complex requiring outstanding creativity, superior initiative and judgment. This is a hands-on position.

Job Responsibilities
  • Completes mechanical and artistic designs of a complex nature;
  • Creates new automotive designs that exceed customer expectations;
  • Maintains current fleet of wind tunnel scale models and finds way to improve upon detail and modularity of design;
  • Design new racing car bodies, using both styling and aerodynamic experience;
  • Comprehensive documentation of new designs and design modifications. Must be able to recall details of previous several years of designs;
  • All work is completed with an eye for accuracy and attention to detail;
  • Continually monitors due dates that cannot be missed, for designs and then releases designs to meet these dates ensuring appropriate lead times for parts procurement to meet production schedule;
  • Able to perform complex troubleshooting under high stress situations and tight timeframes;
  • Performs hand calculations as necessary to support design decisions;
  • Validates new designs and tests systems;
  • Draws concise logical conclusions based on data from experiments/testing;
  • Exhibits vision and foresight to test the extremes of a design and guide team members through well thought out, logical test regimes;
  • Supports ARC Purchasing with sourcing suggestions, alternative manufacturing methods, part substitution evaluations, Vendor evaluations, etc;
  • Ability to work fast, efficiently and effectively within a compressed time schedule to troubleshoot and resolve issues as they arise in the production process with external customers and vendors;
  • Facilitates project flow involving regular contact with other cross functional staff members;
  • Schedules, develops agendas for, facilitates and documents project meetings;
  • Tracks project schedules to ensure adherence to timelines and keeps manager informed on project issues;
  • Visualizes entire scope of project with very little guidance;
  • Performs other required tasks as assigned.

Job Requirements
  • Bachelors Degree in Automotive Mechanical Engineering;
  • Some training in Industrial Design and able to quickly draw new concepts;
  • Must have a strong background and prior experience in aerodynamics;
  • Ten or more year's applicable experience in wind tunnel scale model design and analysis in the automotive segment;
  • Must have a minimum of ten years' experience in wind tunnel design and operation;
  • Must have had experience working with top automotive styling studios and be able to maintain good relationship with them;
  • Minimum of five years' experience working on racing teams to understand their needs and background of what it takes to win races;
  • Capable of creative/innovative design solutions;
  • Experience with the following is desirable: engines/transmission/axle integration, cooling/intake/exhaust systems, suspension design, steering/alignment, chassis/body structures, air conditioning systems, heavy fabrications/casting/composite design, pneumatic/hydraulic systems, brake systems, testing methods, fastener/adhesive applications;
  • Experience with mechanical troubleshooting, root cause analysis and resolution;
  • Excellent time management, planning and organizational skills;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer relations skills demonstrating sensitivity to customer needs and ability to work effectively with others to urgently address issues;
  • Self starter with the ability to work as part of a team in a fast paced environment with some supervision;
  • 3D modeling skills (surfacing a plus), preferably with Creo 2.0;
  • Proven project management skills;
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite of applications;
  • Creative, analytical thinker with a capacity for detail.
