Assistant Professor of Accounting
The University of South Dakota's Beacom School of Business seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Accounting beginning in August of the academic year 2018-2019.
The Accounting Department has experienced significant enrollment growth, offering its undergraduate major to over 180 students on its Vermillion and Sioux Falls campuses, making it the School's largest major. At the graduate level, over 100 students take classes on its main campus or through its online Master of Professional Accountancy programs. The online program, now in its fourth year, is nationally ranked due to its affordability and high CPA exam pass rate. Through the efforts of the School's Career Success Center, the program has a high placement rate (over 93%) of its graduates, and consistently places over 40 students each year in internships with Big Four, national, regional public accounting firms and industry. The eight member department is actively engaged with the profession and works closely with its Advisory Council. Faculty are recognized as outstanding teachers and researchers.
The successful applicant will be expected to teach primarily financial accounting courses, including Intermediate and Advanced accounting. The Assistant Professor is expected to bring a unique and innovative educational experience to students through classroom teaching, academic advising and mentorship. The applicant must be willing to teach courses in both the traditional and online environments. The successful candidates will be expected to teach classes on the main campus in Vermillion, SD, online, and in Sioux Falls, SD, the School's major off-campus site. Contribution to the scholarship of accounting is also required. Service for the Department includes mentoring and advising students interested in accounting, working with student organizations, and assisting with Beacom School of Business events.
Required: A Ph.D. or D.B.A. in Accounting from an AACSB-International accredited business school is required, although ABDs will be considered. Candidates must have a demonstrated ability to contribute to the scholarship of accounting.
Other requirements are proficiency in oral and written communication, and dedication to engagement, service, and the public good. Expertise in financial accounting is required, with a secondary interest in governmental/not-of-profit accounting and/or accounting systems strongly preferred. Candidates with experience working with diverse student, staff, and faculty are preferred.
Preferred Qualifications: The best applicant will have a primary area of teaching in financial accounting including Intermediate and Advanced Accounting. A secondary area of teaching in governmental/not-for-profit accounting or accounting systems is preferred. Related business experience and/or professional certification are preferred. Also preferred is a scholarly interest that complements the position's teaching fields. Experience teaching in an online environment is helpful.
