RESEARCH SPECIALIST B
Duties: This position has two equal components, each of which supports Pancreatic Cancer Translational Center of Excellence (TCE). The first component includes providing research support in the Circulating Tumor Material laboratory, and the second component research support for medical oncologists and clinical research coordinators in the pancreatic cancer clinic.
Circulating Tumor Material Laboratory research support (50%): In the lab, the position will support the Pancreatic Cancer Translational Center of Excellence (TCE) by performing sample receiving, processing, storage, and shipment to study collaborators. Under minimal supervision, the candidate will independently conduct experiments aimed at interrogating patient samples to optimize approaches for the isolation and evaluation of circulating tumor material. The candidate will independently run various technologies for the analysis and capture of circulating tumor cells (CTCs). The individual will train new lab members and will assist the other research specialist in the daily functions of the laboratory. This person may assist the other research specialists in extracting genetic material from captured CTCs and conduct downstream molecular analysis in collaboration with the Center for Personalized Diagnostics and other on-campus sequencing cores. Given the highly collaborative nature of this work and the need for coordination with multiple clinical trial investigators, excellent organization and communication skills are critical. Responsibilities will also include some administrative duties such as ordering of lab supplies, monitoring and calibration of equipment, and organization of data collected on clinical samples. This cutting edge work will be done in a highly collaborative manner together with laboratories in the Department of Pathology, and physician scientists in the Penn School of Medicine. This candidate may assist in animal research.
Pancreatic Cancer Clinic (50%): In the clinic, the candidate will provide research support for the Pancreatic Cancer TCE by assisting the medical oncologists and clinical research coordinators with initiating and conducting participant screening and recruitment. The candidate will also coordinate with clinical teams to arrange the study participants' procedures essential to both the clinical and research procedures. The candidate will attend the procedures to procure study specimens and will be responsible for data entry into various databases including but not limited to REDCap, VELOS, and Excel. The candidate will also independently design study databases and perform database quality-control with minimal supervision. The candidate will have the primary role in the abstraction of medical record information from subject's electronic medical records, interviews and/or questionnaires for entry into the study research databases, and actively track all enrolled study participants for follow up.
Qualifications: A Bachelor's Degree and at least 1-2 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Proficiency in some of the skills listed above, including clinical research coordination, is highly desirable. Computer proficiency, with knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and REDCap is preferred. Previous experience with EPIC and chart abstraction preferred. Experience with tissue culture and blood processing, including serum, plasma, and buffy coat, is preferred. Familiarity with medical terminology is a plus. The candidate is expected to be self-motivated and have the skill and confidence to work independently. Excellent communication, analytical, computer, and organizational skills are essential, as well as keen attention to detail and the ability to multi-task in a fast paced work environment. Position contingent upon funding.
