Director of Spirit Groups

Position Summary

Event Management Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the implementation of the Event Management program for the requested sports (Women’s Basketball, Cross Country, Men’s and Women’s Golf, Men’s and Women’s Track and Field, Rowing, and Softball).

  • Review each sport’s Big Ten Conference Games Management Manual and assume responsibility for any areas related to event management.

  • Meet with the head coach of each of your event-managed sports at least one month in advance of the first home competition.

  • Initiate all necessary communication to the various areas.

  • Contract, schedule and turn in any payroll for each sport’s respective table crew, ancillary personnel, and any other workers deemed necessary.

  • Supervise table crew, ancillary and auxiliary personnel during home contests.

  • Attend and participate in all event management meetings.

  • Complete all necessary paperwork and reports in a professional and timely manner.

  • Crisis management of officials, table crew, equipment and facilities, spectators and their behavior, weather conditions, and any and all other issues deemed necessary by the situation.

  • Assist with set-up and tear-down of equipment in some sports on a need basis.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Spirit Group Responsibilities:

  • Organization and oversight of all aspects of the MSU cheer and dance team programs (and competition squad, if applicable)

  • Coordinate schedule with facilities and teams for weight training, practices and clinics

  • Organize fundraisers to help support the cheer and dance team yearly needs

  • Collaborate with business office on athletic and fundraising budgets

  • Supervise assistant coaches for both teams

  • Work with game management, the marching band, and marketing to enhance the spirit squads interactions with in game operations

  • Plan and follow through with safe and efficient practices for both teams

  • Uphold the policies and procedures of the spirit squads, disciplining when necessary

  • Arrange all the logistics for practice/game scheduling, travel when needed, appearance requests, etc

  • Follow the AACCA rules set for collegiate cheerleading as well continue with updated certification

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

A bachelors degree; 3-5 years of experience working Big Ten Sporting events plus 2-5 year minimum of college cheer/dance coaching experience; AACCA certification mandatory prior to position.
