Summary of Duties:
The Assistant Director (AD) is responsible for directing the Washington State University (WSU) Animal Welfare Program within the Office of Research Assurances (ORA). The AD will ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations, laws, policies, accreditation agency standards and guidelines for the ethical care and use of animals. The AD will lead all administrative, management, technical and operational functions of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), staff and committee within the program. The AD will identify broad objectives and mission statements to facilitate ethical animal research, testing and teaching; develop and administer relevant research compliance policies and procedures; monitor progress of all program metrics, and develop and implement training programs to ensure achievement of the Animal Welfare program's mission and University's objectives. Provide independent, support to the IACUC Chair, Animal Welfare staff and members of the committee as well as principal investigators, veterinary staff and their research staff. Serve as the senior administrator and supervisor for the Animal Welfare Program staff, including budgetary responsibility. Work with the Institutional Official - Vice President for Research, IACUC Chair, ORA Director, Attending Veterinarian and other senior administration and/or key research and teaching staff to facilitate ethical animal research, teaching and testing and institutional compliance over the entire program. Represent the IACUC at a local and national level on matters of significance while communicating professionally and effectively with internal and external stakeholders and members of the public.

Required Qualifications:
Positions require a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and four (4) years of progressively responsible relevant experience, which has included at least one (1) year of managerial experience. A Master’s degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience. Education and experience can be tailored to fit the specific organizational entity/directorial assignment. Positions may require applicable licensure and/or certification.
