Summary of Position:

Within the Office of the Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education, the Associate Director of Stanford Introductory Studies (SIS) has primary responsibility for pedagogy support and training for the 250+ faculty who teach Introductory Seminars (IntroSems), Sophomore College (SoCo) and other SIS courses. This position also supervises one academic technology specialist, in collaboration with VPUE Assessment and Program Evaluation Manager, takes the lead on program assessment, and collaborates with SIS senior staff on budget planning and development of program initiatives.

The Associate Director will work under general direction from the Faculty Director and the Co-director of SIS and will advise the SIS senior staff on short- and long-term strategic planning, especially related to ensuring effective faculty participation in SIS instructional programs. S/he will serve as an expert advisor to SIS teaching faculty on matters related to course design, appropriate pedagogical strategies for SIS classrooms, student mentoring, recognition of student excellence, and other related instructional matters.


Core Duties:
  • Lead and oversee development, implementation, administration, and evaluation of pedagogy programs, workshops, individual consultations, web and print publications serving the 250+ faculty from all seven Schools of the University who teach SIS courses, with special emphasis on IntroSems faculty. Write and edit materials for these purposes; collaborate with faculty on development of course materials, active learning strategies, building mentoring relationships with students, and inclusive approaches to student learning. Support the faculty director's outreach to potential SIS faculty and help orient new faculty to the policies, practices and goals of the program.
  • Design and carry out research related to SIS teaching effectiveness; write reports and make recommendations for new initiatives in faculty outreach and pedagogy support on the basis of analysis of research findings; and conduct program assessments both internally for ongoing program improvements, planning and also in response to VPUE and other external administrative requests for program evaluation and data analysis.
  • Develop partnerships with other VPUE units and offices across the University that promote effective teaching and learning to achieve SIS goals for undergraduate education.
  • The Associate Director may teach or co-teach courses; s/he will advise senior administrative leadership in the development of faculty outreach strategies and other initiatives.
  • Supervise, coach and mentor an SIS Academic Technology Specialist and student staff.

Minimum Requirements:

Education and Experience:

Advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred) in a field represented in the SIS curriculum; expert knowledge of exemplary student-focused pedagogical practices grounded in educational research; 3+ years relevant experience in teaching and academic administration preferably at the college level; 2+ years relevant experience in program assessment and evaluation, preferably in an academic setting; experience in developing program partnerships.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Expertise in effective pedagogy and knowledge of relevant educational research in field.
  • Advanced oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.
  • Ability to oversee, supervise and direct staff.
  • Demonstrated understanding of undergraduate liberal education goals and objectives in the context of a research university.
  • Commitment to addressing issues of diversity and accessibility in higher education Interpersonal skills demonstrating ability to work well with colleagues, faculty, students and staff across the University.
  • Basic knowledge of managing a budget and developing financial plans.

Working Conditions :
  • May work extended hours, evenings or weekends.
