Assistant Director, Student Engagement/Student Union

Summary: The Assistant Director, Student Engagement/Student Union will work with a team of professionals to advance the mission and vision of the Office of Student Engagement. This staff member will develop programs, resources, and systems that support the Wake Forest campus community, specifically working with the Student Union (Campus Programming Board). This includes supporting leadership development, campus-wide events and traditions, student-led initiatives, and other Student Engagement programs. The Assistant Director will be committed to the development of programs and initiatives that support the vibrancy of a diverse and inclusive campus community.

Essential Functions:

  • Advises, trains and mentors the Student Union Programming Board including the Executive Board and the Board of Directors.
  • Supports Student Union events and programs such as concerts, comedy and speakers, Homecoming, aWake All Night, Springfest, President’s Ball, and Lighting of the Quad.
  • Assists in the planning of events during Orientation Week and Black History Month.
  • Supervises a Graduate Advisor for Student Activities.
  • Establishes learning outcomes per the Leadership Pyramid for Student Union.
  • Develops strong relationships and collaborations with student organizations, University departments, and the Winston Salem community.
  • Collaborates with the Art department regarding the Student Union Collection of Contemporary Art.
  • Oversees and audits the Student Union budget and all Student Activities Fee requests for Student Union programming.
  • Attends NACA regional/national conferences with student delegates.
  • Assesses the effectiveness of Student Union programs and initiatives.
  • Oversees the Student Union website, electronic newsletter, and social media platforms.
  • Interprets University policies and procedures for Student Union Executive Board and Directors, student organization members and advisers, and other university constituencies.
  • Collaborates with Campus Programs and Services leadership to develop and assess event management protocols for facilities used for student organization programming.
  • Collaborates with campus partners to develop and implement events and programs in the Sutton Center (hub for well-being and campus recreation) and at Wake Downtown.
  • Promotes and develops leadership initiatives designed to build skills and competencies that support organizational efficacy, advance the community’s diversity and inclusion initiatives, and promote the Division of Campus Life’s Strategic Directions.
  • Coordinates and implements creative outdoor initiatives and programs designed to promote overall well-being, celebrate community values, promote the performing arts, provide meaningful outlets for individual expression, and connect individual students, faculty, and staff around shared interests.

Other Functions:

  • Serves on a variety of committees within Dean of Students/Student Engagement, the Division of Campus Life, and the University community.
  • Participates in departmental and divisional planning, professional development, and team building activities.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Master’s degree in student personnel, higher education, or similar field.
  • At least two years of professional experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and student focus.
  • Ability to operate in a collaborative and professional manner with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse university community.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and experience in creating documents, reports, and presentations.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures established within the University, the Division of Campus Life, and the Office of Student Engagement.
  • Knowledge of student learning and operational assessment processes and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to think critically and proactively problem-solve.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and student focus; ability to operate in a collaborative and professional manor with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse university community.
  • Exceptional project management skills to include the ability to plan ahead, prioritize, organize and lead multiple, concurrent initiatives. Meet project needs in a timely manner until successful completion.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Knowledge of and a professional commitment to student development and effective higher education administration practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  • Experience creating programs/activities that support diverse populations and intercultural exposure.
