Department of Anthropology
One postdoctoral position is available in the School of Social Sciences and the Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Irvine. Under the direction of Principal Investigator Valerie Olson, the postdoctoral fellow will participate in collaborative ethnographic research associated with a one-year, multi-institution study on the strengths and needs of communities in a Southern California watershed. Main tasks include, but are not limited to:
1)Developing and participating in ethnographic research data collection activities, such as community listening workshops, interviews, focus groups, and archival data collection. Specific tasks will include: leading the development of ethnographic data collection instruments; supervising and training research fellows; and assisting study partners with water authority engagement, broadly construed.
2)Participating in ethnographic data analysis and writing, including: partnering with a data management firm to develop data coding, analysis, and display; and contributing to the collaborative writing and editing of the final ethnographic report as appropriate.
3)Providing review, reports, and content as appropriate for water agency plan updates based on the ethnographic study.
4)Project management duties, including but not limited to: producing quarterly progress reports of study activities; contributing to study monitoring; data management and maintenance.
5)Participating in other study activities as needed, such as: technical advisory committee meetings, engagement and education events throughout the watershed, conferences, etc. Participating in other Department of Anthropology activities as needed, including but not limited to giving lectures in one undergraduate anthropology course during the 2017-2018 school year.
Requirements - Candidates must hold a Ph.D. at the time of application in anthropology or sociology. Candidates must have a relevant ethnographic research profile, including: ethnography of community and regional level water insecurity and vulnerability, preferably in the study area of Southern California; research on California water agencies, water policy, and/or water decision making; and community-engaged research. Candidates should also have 3-5 years of progressive research project coordination and data management experience, including: conducting literature reviews; data coordination, monitoring, and management; and preparing reports. Candidates must be able to travel within the regional study area as determined by the project.
The ideal candidate will have experience developing ethnographic research instruments and supervising research assistants. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a record of scholarly excellence and achievement through research publications, teaching, and service.
The appointment is scheduled to begin as early as September 1, 2017 for a period of one year. There is not currently an option for renewal. Salary will be commensurate with experience. Travel expenses for research activities related to the study will be reimbursed. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
