At Stony Brook Medicine, our Physician's Assistants in Cardiothoracic Surgery are valuable members of our team who provides medical services to cardiac surgical patients.

Duties of Physician's Assistant in Cardiothoracic Surgery may include the following but are not limited to:
Assist in the preparing and positioning of patients for Heart or Thoracic Surgery. Serve as first or second assist to the Cardiothoracic Surgeon, assist in setting up equipment in the OR as well as wound and chest closure and application of dressing. Vein Harvesting as required by the Cardiothoracic Surgeon.
Coordination and assessment of pre-hospital evaluation and follow up for admission, inpatient care and discharge planning. Assist with the post-operative monitoring of patients and writing postoperative orders.
Collaborate with others on the service to ensure full participation by all staff in patient care so that patients are taken care of efficiently.
Maintain professional credentials, participate in conferences and lectures, attend teaching rounds and M & M conferences.
All other duties as assigned by the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
Bachelors Degree from an approved US PA Program: Current NY State License/registration. Experience working with Surgery patients in an ICU setting, in a Cardiothoracic Surgery unit, Cardiac Intensive Care Unit or Medical Intensive Care Unit performing approved diagnostic procedures, reviewing lab results/consults in collaboration with the attending physician. Computer literacy required to navigate electronic patient records.
