Job Description

SUMMARY

The Welding Laboratory Technician serves to assist with efficient operation of the program with an emphasis on ordering supplies, preparation of materials, and maintenance, organization and cleaning of the lab areas. This position may be used for both railroad and college programs.

JOB OBJECTIVES

  1. Main duty - Mechanically prepare welding materials using metal shears and thermal cutting processes to code specs for AWS level certifications. Organize and stock labs with welding materials and personal protective equipment.



Performance is acceptable when:
  1. material prepared to specs and made available to classes in a timely fashion
  2. internal processes and safety guidelines are followed.
  3. all areas are maintained free of debris, trash and clutter to include compound, yard work and lab areas
  4. students, staff and customers (external and internal) receive proper service.


  1. Main duty - Order materials, maintain and repair equipment, and retain records for welding programs.



Performance is acceptable when:
  1. materials are ordered on time
  2. materials ordered comply with BNSF monthly budget and guidelines
  3. students and staff have proper materials
  4. equipment is maintained and/or repaired to manufacture's specifications


  1. Main duty - Operate forklift to unload trucks



Performance is acceptable when:
  1. lab tech in properly trained in safety
  2. trucks are unloaded safely and without damage to materials
  3. materials are stored and maintained properly


  1. Main duty - Adhere to safety requirements



Performance is acceptable when:
  1. lab tech uses all required PPE
  2. uses tools and equipment safely
  3. completes lockout/tagout, fork lift and other training as required
  4. CPR and AED classes are completed
  5. assists with Building Emergency Leaders (BEL) needs in lab area

Required
  • Knowledge of safety in metal working field. (required)
  • Ability to work with variety of metal working operations including welding, cutting, shearing, sawing, and milling. (required)
  • Must pass a welding test to demonstrate ability


Required Experience
  • Associates degree including course work/training in metal working and/or welding related operations. (required)
  • Five years of related work experience. (required)

Preferred
  • Experience in operation of forklift. (preferred)
  • Hydraulics and hose repair
