Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost James C. Bean is seeking a seasoned administrator to serve as a key member of his senior leadership team and provide supervision of academic budgeting, academic space planning, university decision support (formerly institutional research), office of the registrar and commencement, executive searches, and the Provost's digital strategy unit.
Major Areas of Responsibilities:

  • Serve as chief budget and planning and operations officer for the Provost's Office and provide oversight of budget development and management of an annual operating budget in excess of $800 million.
  • Provide high-level analytical support to the Provost and provide advice and recommendations related to planning and implementation of the university's capital and operating budgets.
  • Work with various constituencies within the university to develop administrative, fiscal, and operational policies, processes, and procedures which promote cost savings, ensure that all academic units operate within their annual budget; and that financial transactions are within university guidelines.
  • In partnership with the Vice President for Facilities and Vice President for Campus Planning approve and manage all academic renovations, space planning and faculty start up totaling approximately $60 million per year.
  • Working closely with the Provost, provide support to the Senior Leadership Team on university-wide strategic planning and space issues including the institutional Long Range Plan and Capital Master Plan.
  • Approve human resource activities for all academic units including nine academic schools/colleges.
  • Supervise the Provost's Budget Unit, Offices of University Decision Support, University Registrar and Commencement and Digital Strategies unit.
  • Assist the Colleges and School Deans with strategic planning and operational issues.
  • Provide dotted line oversight of the Associate Deans for Administration and Finance for the schools and colleges, and finance directors for Information Systems, Library, Research/Graduate Studies, and Undergraduate Studies.
  • Serve as a member of university wide committees including: Board of Trustees Financial Affairs Committee, Academic Deans' Council, Council of Associate Deans for Administration and Finance (Lead), RCM Budget Model Planning, Labor Relations Committee, Operations Council, Information Technology Planning Team and Facilities Planning.
  • Manage all executive search processes for the Provost.
  • Represent the Provost at internal and external meetings.


    Qualifications and Experience
    • Master’s degree required. Doctoral degree preferred.
    • Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible budget, analysis, planning and management experience in a complex educational, research or other closely related organization.
    • Demonstrated experience with development of varied and complex financial/programmatic analyses and reports in support of strategic decision-making.
    • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively convey complex data to a wide array of audiences.
    • Demonstrated leadership ability with a proven record of success in working with all levels of leadership and staff in a rapidly changing and complex organization.
    • Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills.
    • Strong interpersonal skills.
    • Knowledge of, and experience with, the culture and financial systems of Northeastern University.
