This role serves as the senior finance leader for Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM). The position oversees all finance functions of the institution (including accounting, planning, reporting and analysis, and internal controls), ensuring compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), higher education regulatory authorities and advisory organizations, and Adtalem Global Education policies, procedures and practices.

The position will serve as the catalyst to drive improved financial and operating performance specifically focusing on revenue growth, process improvement and re-design.

The position reports directly to RUSM's Dean and Chancellor (solid-line) and to the Chief Financial Officer, Adtalem Global Education (dotted-line).

  • Oversees and is chiefly responsible the annual planning and forecasting processes; enhances the existing planning processes and structure in a manner which facilitates transparency, forecast accuracy, timeliness, continuous improvement and revenue growth
  • As a senior leader and member of the Dean's Cabinet, provides leadership to the senior team to ensure strategic and operating plans are cohesive and aligned to the overall Adtalem Global Education strategy
  • Analyzes and interprets financial data and oversees a team that ensures the transfer of that data into meaningful and focused reports to drive performance and action
  • Provides financial analysis and business analytical decision leadership for the senior team
  • Supports information requests from the Adtalem Global Education finance team
  • Participates in monthly closing processes, with full understanding of all key journal entries and impact on overall institution P&L and balance sheet
  • In collaboration with the Vice Dean, prepares student enrollment updates by semester and by cohort to determine actual enrollment and future projections
  • In partnership with the Dominica Campus Administrator, oversees the institution's finance team, and regularly evaluates plans for continuous improvement of the efficiency, effectiveness, and service level of the team. Provides motivation and training, as well as recommends growth opportunities for finance team colleagues
  • Provides strategic financial input and leadership on financial projections, reporting and analysis on issues affecting institution (i.e., evaluation of clinical affiliation costs, competitor tuition increases, potential alliances, new business, investments, and academic strategic plans, etc.)
    - Prepares financials for annual strategic plans; and is the chief financial contributor in management decision-making regarding specific strategic initiatives.
    - - Provides financial approval on any contracts into which the University may enter.
  • Oversees the annual institution portion of financial and Sarbanes-Oxley audits. Ensures the minimum requirements of Sarbanes-Oxley are achieved on a consistent basis.
  • Oversees asset management in maintaining appropriate controls over asset acquisition and management, including the Capital Expenditure Authorization (CEA) process.
  • Works with Institution and Adtalem Global Education leadership and outside vendors to implement and maintain institution's Business Continuity plans.-
  • Preparation for (and attendance/presentation at) institution's Board of Trustees' meetings
  • Approves and continually monitors all institution's headcount/organization changes with comparisons to budgets/forecasts.

    • Masters' Degree in Accounting or equivalent required; CPA and/or MBA preferred.
    • Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible financial management experience, with oversight of financial functions.
    • Strong financial management, analytical and reporting skills.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to write, develop, and deliver presentations and training.
    • Ability to build trust and effective working relationships across a broad range of people and functions.
    • Uses strong influencing skills to build commitment and persuade others to take appropriate action. Can challenge and confront stakeholders appropriately while maintaining relationships; seeks input from key partners within other institutions
    • Works effectively in a matrix environment.
      Strong knowledge of GAAP, SOX compliance, business acumen, and IT systems.
      Excellent computer systems and data management skills.
    • Understands the importance of developing and retaining talent and creating a high performing work environment.
    • Must be a team player who is also capable of working independently with strong self-motivation.
    • Prefer experience or exposure within a geographically dispersed, multi-unit, large organization (educational, government or corporate).
    • Understanding of accreditation criteria with the U.S. Department of Education for Title IV is desired
    • Willingness to travel, especially to Dominica where the basic sciences campus is located.
