Smith College is accepting applications for the Director of Field Education.  Reporting to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Director is responsible for administration of the School’s field education program for master’s level students; provides strategic leadership and utilize data informed approaches in the development and implementation of SSW field curriculum consistent with the vision of the faculty and that meets or exceeds the mandatory competencies as specified by the Council on Social Work Education; leads efforts to recruit, develop and provide ongoing support to field internship sites and to field instructors; initiates and maintains collaborative partnerships with students; and takes leadership with other schools and professional organizations on issues of field education.

Additionally, the Director is responsible for the operations and working climate of the field department. This includes (a) supervising professional and support staff in their work and professional development; (b) creating opportunities, policies, and procedures that support student learning and their professional development; (c) managing and overseeing department operations in collaboration with other School departments; (d) adhering to School and department policies.  The successful candidate will approach all areas of responsibility in a manner that supports anti-racism, anti-oppression practice, and social justice.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Student learning:  Identify, establish, and support internship sites across the country that are consistent with the mission of the SCSSW, that adhere to the educational policies of the Council on Social Work Education, and that will provide SCSSW students with current, relevant, and excellent learning opportunities in clinical social work practiceOversee/monitor the performance of field placement agencies to be consistent with SSW curriculum policies and the mission of the School. This may require travel as necessary

Organize and oversee a timely and appropriate placement process which assigns students to field learning sites.  Work closely with the Associate/Assistant Directors of Field Education to identify and support field advisors, support them in their roles and function, and provide them with ongoing training in their work with students.  Monitor students, agencies, and field advisors in their educational functions in accordance with criteria approved through the faculty governance structure regarding curriculum. Integrate an anti-racism and anti-oppression lens throughout the field learning experience and the processes that support it.  Provide ongoing, timely support to students and field advisors if and when challenges to student learning emerge.

Continuously research the literature to ensure best practices are applied in all aspects of field education. Work with student representatives and organizations to ensure that student perspectives are represented in curricular work and structuring and content of learning opportunities.

Administrative:  Collaborate with the SSW Finance Manager to establish a meaningful and informed departmental budget.  Effectively manage the department budget for the field education department.  Serve as the Chair of the SSW curriculum of the field education sequence. Perform all requirements of this position which may include overseeing relevant areas of curriculum such as field assignments and/or seminars, working with the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs on scheduling and recommendations for hiring.

Develop and implement field related policies in collaboration with faculty and the Associate Dean of Academic AffairsOversee and maintain relevant department data systems ensuring their coordination with the School’s larger information system strategies and their compliance with policies and mandates. Review all agency, supervisor, and student evaluation data.  Analyze outcome assessment data and make recommendations as needed.  Oversee the timely and accurate preparation and updating of field educational manuals, forms, and administrative procedures consistent with relevant federal guidelines.  Oversee educational programming for agency supervisors and field advisors. 

Supervise and support professional and support staff within the department.  Work collaboratively with the Associate Dean for Graduate Enrollment and Student Services to ensure a coordinated and effective admissions process.  Work with other relevant School departments on areas of coordinated programming.  Participate in relevant committee meetings including SSW’s monthly anti-racism and clinical practice meetings.

Community:  Represent the SCSSW Field Department in relevant agency, college, organizational, and community-based settings including admissions activities.  Participate in scholarly presentations, research, and/or publications related to field education and social work practice.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:  MSW from a CSWE accredited School of Social Work with a minimum of five years’ experience in field instruction in social work within an education setting or an equivalent combination of education/experience.

Skills: Advanced knowledge and experience in clinical social work practice.  Demonstrated personal commitment to anti-racism, anti-oppression practice and social justice.  A vision of excellence in field education.  Demonstrated ability to supervise and lead with the requisite skills required.
