Summary of the Position
Under the direction of the Department Chair and the Lab Manager, the Lab Coordinators perform varied professional duties to assist the faculty and contribute to the safe and efficient functioning of the labs, and important component of the department's curriculum. Lab Coordinators contribute to the student's rich learning experience in the sciences at Bentley. Lab Coordinators are primarily assigned to courses in their area of professional training within the department, but depending on their skills and experience and the needs of the department, they may perform similar functions for courses in other areas requiring similar skills.
Works as part of a team to support laboratory activities associated with teaching and research in the Natural & Applied Sciences Department. Lab preparation duties: prepares and sets up materials/kits for laboratory exercises, breaks down lab and works with faculty to ensure the safety of lab procedures. Laboratory instruction/teaching: assists faculty with teaching responsibilities in the lab setting such as being present along with faculty during lab exercises, assisting students in the lab as needed, and proctoring make up exams. Maintains lab equipment and supplies and maintains functionality of lab facilities. Cleans and maintains equipment. Repairs or oversees the need for repair of equipment. Ensures proper inventory of materials, works with faculty to ensure compliance with safety regulations (MSDS sheets, etc.) May hire, supervise and evaluate student employees. Assists faculty in the development of new laboratory exercises and courses as appropriate. Performs various other duties including purchasing, updating bulletin boards and displays, and administrative support functions as needed. Participates in student and faculty research projects as appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications(Education and Experience Requirements)
Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in chemistry or equivalent, plus a minimum of 1–3 years related work experience, including academic institution or other facility with relevant laboratory functions, analytical equipment, and/or computer information technologies. Should be proficient in Microsoft Office. Enthusiasm for working both independently as well as part of a team; and a strong commitment to safe laboratory practices, chemical handling, and chemical waste management are required.
An MS in biochemistry or related fields in chemistry, biology, or analytical chemistry is preferred. Should have outstanding laboratory and computer skills as well as a demonstrated background in chemical and biological methods. Individuals with teaching experience or experience working with students in a laboratory environment preferred.
The job requires the physical skill necessary to move about a lab area, setting up equipment. There may be some lifting required. In addition, some time is spent at the keyboard, and much time is spent on their feet in the classroom/lab. The position requires the manual dexterity to safely handle equipment and materials.
