Life Safety Technician, Team Lead


Job Description Summary:

The Division of Operations, Facilities Maintenance Life Safety Shop is seeking a Life Safety Technician, Team Lead. The Team Lead will assist the Supervisor with day to day operations. The work Schedule is Monday - Friday from 7:00 to 4:00 pm. The Lead will be well trained, highly organized and a professional who takes pride in his/her work and can perform various customer service duties as required throughout the day. The desired candidate can work a flexible work schedule and available for on-call duty and weekend work as needed. The Team Lead assists with the assignment and coordination and/or execution of activities within the shop and possesses the ability to walk, stand, sit, and perform repetitive duties and report to the Life Safety Supervisor.
The Life Safety Team Lead is responsible for all fire and life safety systems to ensure compliance with University, state, federal, and local safety policies and regulations.
• Investigates and identifies fire alarm and fire sprinkler system problems and to develop plans to affect such repairs.
• Evaluates facilities/equipment to identify unsafe conditions and develops preventative and/or improvement maintenance schedules for all fire systems and their components.
• Inspects fire systems to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies; designs and plans fire system alterations.
• Reviews plans and specifications related to fire/life safety for renovations and new construction.
• Acts as liaison with Fire Marshal, and any state, federal or private insurance investigators inspecting University facilities related to fire/life safety; acts as University Inspector on major fire/life safety construction projects.
• Works with Risk Management and housing operation leads to inspect, identify and facilitate correction of regulatory violations.
• Performs construction management duties for all construction projects relating to fire/life safety; may prepare sketches and drawings for minor construction projects utilizing computer assisted software.
• Prepares correspondence and informal contracts to agencies and vendors for material and labor agreements; coordinates all hands-on repairs related to alarm and sprinkler systems.
• Researches and recommends safety equipment.
• Documents safety inspections, drawing attention to dangerous areas/procedures and recommending corrective actions.
• Maintains knowledge of federal, state, and local safety regulations, protocols, codes, and procedures pertaining to fire/life safety.
• Serves and/or represents supervisor at various meetings that may impact the unit.
• Enhances professional knowledge and skills by attending job-related seminars, workshops, conferences, and/or reviewing published literature.
• Manages/performs special project assignments as requested.
Team Lead Duties as required; including outages coverage.
• Team Lead provides oversight and quality assurance to other personnel on work products, operations, including inspections. In the absence of the Supervisor the lead provides supervision formally. Assists Supervisor with preparation of weekly work schedules, prioritization and distribution of work including service calls and preventive maintenance.
• Performs other work related duties as requested. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/GED plus 3 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:

NICET Certified Level 3 or 4 (National Institute for Certification of Engineering Technologies) is necessary, plus four years of practical experience with fire/life safety systems to include fire sprinkler and suppression systems.
A valid driver's operator's license is necessary.
Knowledge of all federal, state and local regulations pertaining to fire/life safety is necessary.
Knowledge of electrical distribution as it relates to fire/life safety is necessary.
Knowledge of design requirement, technical operating details of fire/life safety alarm/suppression systems, and the ability to coordinate the repair work of such equipment, is necessary.

Ability to conduct him or herself in a professional manner and provide excellent customer service to external and internal customers.
Ability to utilize and manage work order ticket using AiM.
