Essential Job Duties: One postdoctoral fellow position in Infectious Disease Microbiology is available in Casey Theriot's group (Department of Population Health and Pathobiology, College of Veterinary Medicine, North Carolina State University). The Theriot Laboratory is interested in understanding how antibiotics alter the gastrointestinal microbiota and metabolome to allow for Clostridium difficile colonization and infection. We use relevant animal models of disease to study the bacterial communities and metabolites required by C. difficile to colonize the gut. The selected individual will perform experiments both in vitro and using animal models to test hypotheses regarding C. difficile colonization. Research activities include management of multiple, concurrent research projects, method development, designing and carrying out experiments, cultivation and growth of anaerobic gut bacteria, performance of molecular and biochemical assay, and data compilation. Procedures will include molecular and cell biological techniques on bacterial cultures and animal infection experiments. Research efforts will contribute toward publications, presentations, and other funding opportunities. The post-doc will help characterize bacteria from the gastrointestinal tract that are able to inhibit C. difficile germination, colonization and or toxin production. Applicants with a background in microbiology of infectious diseases and/or bacterial engineering are highly encouraged to apply. This postdoctoral research scholar is expected to last 12 months, with the possibility of an additional 12-month extension.

Minimum Education/Experience:

Department Required Skills: A deep interest in interdisciplinary collaboration, strong quantitative skills and good oral and writing skills are expected.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Experience characterizing bacteria for biotechnological applications and knowledge in gut microbiome analysis is desirable. The postdoctoral scholar shall have a Ph.D. degree in a relevant quantitative discipline (microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, chemical engineering and related fields).
