Medical Technologist - Clinical Pathology Lab

Primary Function of Organization Unit: The Clinical Pathology Laboratory (CPL) is operational 24 hours/day, 365 days per year and is comprised of 7 smaller laboratory entities: Pharmacology, Coagulation, Immunohematology, Hematology, Chemistry, Urinalysis, and Cytology. The CPL has three major functions: it is primarily a teaching/service laboratory, aiding in the teaching of Clinical Pathology to veterinary students through providing laboratory results for the diagnosis and treatment of disease in patients admitted to the Veterinary Health Complex (VHC). This laboratory also provides clinical laboratory testing for research cases in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) and functions as a service laboratory to CVM researchers. Additionally, it functions as a reference laboratory for selected tests sent in by referring veterinarians. Since the lab began in 1984, our services have expanded to include a large variety of tests with approximately 550 order able tests and 80 test profiles. The laboratory also serves as a central receiving area for all "send-out" tests, i.e. necessary tests unavailable at the CVM-VHC that must be mailed or delivered to reference labs within or outside the CVM. An average of 4,000 accessions/month are performed in this laboratory.

Essential Job Duties: Performs testing in cytology, blood bank, coagulation, hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, and point of care. This position functions as a "floater position" during day shift, analysis of samples for emergency cases that come into the veterinary health complex in the evening, and analysis of research samples. This position also provides training to emergency personnel who perform lab testing, junior technicians, technical staff and limited teaching of veterinary students. This is a part-time position at 20 hours per week.

Minimum Education/Experience:

Department Required Skills: Experience with laboratory testing and analysis. Experience with the oversight of a medical laboratory setting. Experience with testing in cytology, blood bank, coagulation, hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, and point of care.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: BS with major in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry or Biology. 3 years experience in clinical pathology. ASCP Certification or equivalent.
