Assistant Director of Career Services, School of Communication

The Assistant Director/School of Communication counsels, advises and provides career-related educational programming for students and recent graduates from the School of Communication (Journalism, Marketing Communication, Communication Studies and Communication Sciences and Disorders) and Writing, Literature and Publishing.

Campus Location: Boston Campus

Required Knowledge:
• Masters degree in Higher Education, Counseling, Human Resources, or related field
• Knowledge of Strong Interest Inventory, MBTI, and/or other assessment instruments
• Excellent oral and written communication skills; solid presentation and public speaking skills; excellent interpersonal skillls; ability to effectively work with students from a broad range of backgrounds and life experiences; a commitment to service and inclusion excellence.

Preferred/Desirable Knowledge:
• Experience with database Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), Career Services vendor products (i.e. Handshake). • Strategic planning, decision-making skills; self-motivated, detail oriented, organized, flexible • Experience in/knowledge of arts and/or communications career fields preferred

Required Prior Work Experience:
• Two-four years experience in Career Services, College Relations, or related field preferred

Job Duties:
  • INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING - Counsel, coach and advise undergraduate students and recent graduates from Journalism, Marketing Communication, Communication Studies and Political Communication, and Writing, Literature and Publishing on career development issues through individual appointments, phone appointments and email correspondence. Issues include, but are not limited to self-assessment, career decision-making and planning, choice of major, internship/job search strategies, resume and cover letter preparation, networking, and interviewing. Provide walk-in advising for all students and alumni as scheduled. Demonstrate and educate students on Career Buzz and other related databases
  • WORKSHOP DEVELOPMENT AND DELIVERY - Develop and facilitate workshops for delivery in house and in classrooms as well as workshops for campus partners, (e.g. Res Life, Athletic Department and student organizations. - Develop and deliver networking opportunities and worksite visits for all students.
  • RELATIONSHIP BUILDING - Cultivate and maintain relationships with student organizations, alumni, faculty, staff and other constituents to support counseling and programming efforts. Participate in division-wide and all-campus events including but not limited to Division Meetings, Orientation, Admission Open Houses and Commencement as well as academic and other committee meetings (as needed).
  • RESOURCE MANAGEMENT - Develop and contribute relevant career related blogs and other sources for Career Buzz.
  • PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - Stay abreast of Career Services and relevant industry news and information by participating in professional association activities and industry panels and networking events, reading publications and maintaining faculty, industry and employer contacts. Participate in employer visits on or off-campus to stay abreast of industry trends. Update colleagues and constituents as appropriate.
  • ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES - Enter and maintain counseling notes into the appropriate database.
