Primary Function of Organization Unit: The JC Raulston Arboretum (JCRA) at NC State University is a teaching, research, and public garden that is dedicated to diversifying the American landscape. As a collections-based institution within the department of horticultural science, it serves as a living laboratory for students and researchers.
Essential Job Duties: This Gardens Manager will serve as the lead horticulturist at the JC Raulston Arboretum supervising horticultural specialists, research technicians, interns, and volunteers. The position will work hands-on in the arboretum maintaining gardens, helping design and implement new garden spaces, diagnosing and treating abiotic and biotic problems, maintaining and improving nursery operations, and ensuring accurate and comprehensive record keeping.
Department Required Skills: * Good organizational and time management skills. * Strong oral communication skills. * Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment, manage competing demands, and deal with frequent change or unexpected events. * Keen attention to detail. * Horticultural experience.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: * Bachelor's degree and 3 years experience in horticulture. * 2 years of supervisory experience. * Strong landscape design experience and/or landscape construction experience. * Experience writing and public speaking. * Experience managing greenhouses. * Experience in propagation techniques. * Strong knowledge of warm temperate plant materials.
Necessary Licenses and Certifications: * A valid drivers license is required for travel. NC drivers license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained. * A North Carolina Pesticide License is required and must be obtained within six months of employment.
