NURSE PRACTITIONER - General GI Outpatient Clinic
Medicine - Gastroenterology


The APP provides medical care to adult patients with gastrointestinal conditions in a general GI outpatient clinic. This care is provided in collaboration with the supervising physician and the other members of the general gastroenterology faculty who will serve as supervising physicians. The APP will evaluate and provide ongoing treatment to patients presenting to clinics or facilities of Duke University Health System in accordance with established scope of practice as specified in North Carolina Board of Medicine Medical Practice Act NCGS Chapter 90 for Medicine and Allied Occupations.

Duties may include but are not limited to those listed below and may include other outpatient procedures or services as deemed appropriate by the supervising physician. It is anticipated that the APP will see patients in the North Duke Street Clinic and may also see patients at other Durham locations depending on Division needs and clinic availability.

Specific daily activities include:

• Record the history of present illness, past medical, family and social history, perform physical examinations in outpatient setting

• Establish and development treatment plan; care will be provided in conjunction with MD's as needed

• Prescribe appropriate medications to a specialty pharmacy that will handle prior authorization and other necessary paperwork; order refills as needed

• Patient and family teaching

• Order appropriate labs, tests and procedures and follow up with patient as needed

• Coordinate care and refer to other medical professionals as needed

• Document clinic, telephone, and other patient encounters in the Epic (Maestro) system

• Review lab results in Maestro, communicate and interpret results

• Collaborate with HUB Triage Nurses regarding patient triage and return patients calls within 24-48 hours; Provide feedback regarding scheduling of urgent patient appointments

• Review outside records including clinic notes, hospital records, outside radiographs, lab, and other test results

• Collaborate with nursing staff to complete patient paperwork including medication pre-certifications for insurance companies, durable medical equipment requests, disability paperwork, and handicapped permit applications

• Attendance at GI Grand Rounds is expected. Participation in other divisional educational events is also encouraged

Education

Work requires completion of accredited Nurse Practitioner program. State of North Carolina licensure is also required.

Experience

1-2 years of gastroenterology experience preferred

LICENSES, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:

• Current NC License with the NC Medical Board

• Current DEA registration

• Credentialing through Duke University Health System

• American Red Cross BLS and ACLS certification

• Adequate CME as outlined by NC Medical Board, Duke Credentialing Office and AANP

• Completion of required Duke modules (safety, HIPAA, etc.)

• Completion of Maestro training
