The University of Virginia, Department of Medicine, Infectious Disease Division seeks a Research Scientist to work in the laboratory of Dr. Molly Hughes.
Qualified candidates must have a PhD, preferably in the field of Microbiology, Infectious Diseases, or related fields and have at least three years of post-doctoral experience. Candidates must have prior experience writing & publishing manuscripts and have research experience working in all of the following areas:

The overarching goal of the project is to develop innovative diagnostic methods for rapid detection of antibiotic resistance and/or develop novel antimicrobial strategies to combat infections with these multi-drug resistant organisms. The position will entail extensive in vitro experiments with Gram-negative bacteria and potentially, in vivo animal studies.
Experiments involving Gram-positive bacteria may also be performed as part of the ongoing project in order to continue to test and understand underlying mechanisms of action of candidate new antimicrobial agents. The in vivo animal studies will involve the design and execution of experiments using a variety of bacterial pathogens and animal models under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator. Responsibilities will include writing and preparing manuscripts for scientific publication; making presentations at local, regional, national, and/or international conferences; and supervising and training students and staff in a collaborative manner in the laboratory.
