Position Type: Professional Research Staff
Department: Department of Physics
Posting Date: 07-31-2017
The Department of Physics at the University of Virginia seeks a postdoctoral Research Associate with hands on experience in Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) instrumentation, and expertise in (i) the characterization of novel materials using Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) techniques or/and (ii) synthesis of thin films using Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) technique.
One of the main duties of this position will be to work independently for integrating a MBE setup to the existing ARPES equipment in the lab. The goal of this research project is to synthesize thin film samples, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) in particular, and to conduct their insitu characterization using ARPES. In addition, this individual will work closely with undergraduate and graduate students of the group to train them in handling UHV instruments, participate in lab- and synchrotron-based ARPES experiments, analyze new as well as existing ARPES data, and actively participate in manuscript preparations. Candidates with expertise in both ARPES and MBE are preferred.
Candidates must have completed all requirements for a Ph.D. degree in physics, materials science, or a closely related field prior to the appointment start date, and demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills. This is a one-year appointment, with the potential for the renewal by one additional year, contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance.
