Job Summary/Basic Function:
The Frank W. and Sue Mayborn School of Journalism at the University of North Texas invites applications for the position of Associate Dean. The successful applicant will be a visionary administrator, dynamic leader, strategic thinker, and established professor. The position will begin in August 2018. The Associate Dean will have a diverse academic and professional background and hold a Ph.D. in journalism, communications, public relations, advertising or a related field.
The Associate Dean will manage a variety of administrative aspects including supervising and mentoring full-time faculty, staff and part-time instructors, scheduling courses and teaching one course each semester. Additionally, he or she will assist with strategic planning, student engagement, accreditation preparation, curriculum assessment and other special projects as needed. Our program is growing rapidly and the Associate Dean will have opportunities to contribute to an evolving and forward-thinking program. Service to the university and some travel to assist with partnerships and fundraising is required.
The Associate Dean will provide strong, collaborative leadership in a school that is expanding and implementing a multi-platform curriculum. Student internships are required and students gain valuable hands-on experience by working in student media in print/online as well as with Denton Public Access TV, Mayborn Magazine and the Denton Live magazine. Students also manage an advertising and public relations firm as well as a student-run photo agency. This position will report directly to the dean and help oversee the academic undergraduate and graduate units that are accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education for Journalism and Mass Communication.
The Mayborn has the only professionally accredited graduate journalism program in the four-state region of Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arkansas. The Mayborn has more than 1,200 students, 23 full-time faculty members and a number of adjuncts. The Mayborn offers journalism classes in broadcast/digital, print/digital, advertising and public relations as well as photojournalism. The Mayborn is proud that all full-time faculty members have substantial professional experience, and the university is a Carnegie Tier One research university with strong global partnerships in Mexico, Europe and Asia. The Mayborn has a strong commitment to narrative journalism and hosts the annual Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference, the nation's leading conference for aspiring and experienced writers, journalists and authors.

Applicants must have significant experience in journalism or a media-related field and the academy.
Experience leading diverse teams and managing change are required.
Demonstrated administrative skills and collaborative leadership experience are required.
A Ph.D. in journalism, communications, public relations, advertising or a related field is required.
A proven track record of current and past research in journalism, public relations, communications, advertising or a journalism-related field.
Actively involved in academic and professional journalism organizations, such as AEJMC, BEA and NCA.
