Degree and Area of Specialization:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field preferred.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

One or more years' work experience with Linux infrastructure, system administration, Linux applications and utilities and IT services is required.

Programming experience in languages such as Perl or Python is required. Hardware and software troubleshooting skills, and excellent oral and written communication skills are required.

Knowledge and skills in security, storage, networking and other IT areas related to providing services and support to the Computer Sciences Department are preferred.

- Must be able to work well in a team environment, with minimal supervision.
- Occasional night and weekend work may be required for specific projects.



Position Summary:

The Computer Systems Lab operates and maintains the IT facilities and supports all IT activities of the Computer Sciences Department at UW-Madison. The CSL infrastructure is mostly Linux based, with some Windows servers. Our current Linux environment is a mix of RedHat Enterprise Linux and Ubuntu Linux. Additional activities include network management, storage, security, purchasing, database systems and applications, web servers and applications, and cloud services. The CSL has six full-time professional staff and 10-12 student hourly staff (part-time).

This position will be a member of the Computer Systems Lab staff, to support our Linux infrastructure and desktop environment, and other IT activities and services for the Computer Sciences Department. This may involve working closely with faculty, students and staff to meet the particular needs of the various projects.

Participation in UW campus organizations is also encouraged. Information technology development and support expertise is spread throughout the campus. Cooperative efforts and relationships are strongly encouraged.
