Under the general supervision of the Associate Director of Leadership Development & Recreation, the Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of the Outdoor Recreation programs and services at California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB). The Coordinator will assist the Director with the fiscal management, facility management, day-to-day operations of Outdoor Recreation, Cycle Center, Challenge Course, Outdoor Leadership Program, and continued development of a comprehensive campus recreation department. The Coordinator will have oversight of the university’s Outdoor Recreation programs including: risk management, policy and procedure, scheduling and event planning, personnel supervision and training, marketing and promotions, programming, strategic planning, and program assessment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Responsible for the functional operations and supervision of the Outdoor Recreation Program including staff and participant recruitment, program planning and scheduling, training and supervision of student employees, ensuring supervision and structured operation of the program, and ensuring that activities are conducted in accordance with established service standards and consistent with the university vision.
- Recruits, hires, trains, supervises, retains, evaluates, and oversees the daily work of student employees; records, maintains, and monitors student employee payroll.
- Maintains full knowledge of current risk management standards and best practices in the outdoor recreation profession. Establishes, implements, and ensures compliance with risk management policies, standards, and procedures in all program areas to ensure they meet or exceed industry, university, and CSU system standards. Assists in enforcement and compliance of safety, travel, risk and injury policies. Ensures adequate maintenance, appearance, and use of facilities and equipment at all times.
- Maintains participation numbers, conducts needs assessments, surveys student interests, evaluates programs and marketing initiatives, assesses learning outcomes, and promotes public relations for the Outdoor Recreation program, Student Recreation, and the Student Activities & Leadership Development department.
- Publicizes and promotes outdoor recreation and instructional programs within the university by working with a marketing student assistant and/or intern to produce print advertisements, create flyers, utilize social media, utilize community and recreation management software, and design and update web sites. Facilitates acquisition and use of photographs, videos, and participant input to promote programs. Publishes news and announcements.
- Identifies, develops, distributes, and enforces policies, procedures, and requirement of eligibility and participation. Conducts and/or coordinates meetings and sign-up procedures; develops and communicates schedules, cancellations or schedule modifications; and collects and appropriately handles participant fees.
- Conducts training on emergency action plans, risk management, outdoor skills, leadership, diversity training, policy enforcement and disciplinary actions, team building and other areas. Develops and maintains standard operating procedure manuals for outdoor recreation programs and facilities. Ensures that staff and volunteers are knowledgeable and appropriately trained, and continuously trained.
- Aligns with and is current with the industry standards. Provides students with professional development opportunities to network at state, regional, and national conferences.
- Develops, implements, and evaluates programs and services in support of student leadership and development, including conducting needs assessments and formulating recommendations.
- Creates and maintains relationships with appropriate individuals and departments on campus. Develops effective liaison relationships with and between the community and Student Activities, student clubs, and organizations. Participates on relevant on-campus committees.
- Meets with students individually and in group settings to advise students regarding leadership and campus involvement and directs students to appropriate resources.
- Delivers workshops and other presentations in small and large group settings on student development, leadership and other related topics. Participates in the development and delivery of programming and training for student leaders and the general student community.
- Attends seminars and conferences to maintain program and professional development.
- In coordination with the Director, assists in budget preparation, policy development, program evaluation, partnership agreements, and public relations for the Recreation department. Designates participation fees.
- Makes appropriate purchases of rental and outings equipment, and ensures appropriate preventive maintenance programs are designed, budgeted and conducted for each item of equipment. Maintains equipment for outdoor recreation and instructional programs including appropriate care, use, storage, and inventory.
- Utilizes Community and R25 to reserve and manage Student Recreation facilities and utilize interdepartmental relationships for other facilities. Coordinates facility usage and other statistical data for use in assessments and monthly and annual reports.
- Prepares and submit all appropriate forms related to Student Recreation as defined within campus policies in regards to budget, personnel, travel, food, etc. Assists with the approval and reconciliation of payroll for all Student Recreation student assistants.
- Creates and maintains relationships with appropriate individuals and departments on campus.
- Develops effective liaison relationships with and between campus and community partners, student clubs and organizations.
- Assists Recreation with high impact programs and events.
- Organizes and administer other duties as needed or designated.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Working knowledge of: the practices, procedures and activities of collegiate recreational sports; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management. General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
Ability to: interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize multicultural, multi-sexed and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned. Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office.
Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job related field maybe substituted for one year of the professional experience.
Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job‑ related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Master's degree in a related field. Demonstrated knowledge and technical skills associated with standard outdoor adventure programming and ropes course facilitation and management. Additional credentials including: LNT, AMGA/PCIA, ACA, and demonstrated mastery of outdoor skills. Curriculum design, site management, group management, and knowledge of the Outcomes Model are desired. Significant experience developing university student programs and services. Experience in supervising student and professional staff. Experience in assessment of programs and activities with a focus on learning outcomes, retention, and participation rates. Spanish bilingual skills (speaking and writing). Experience working with a diverse and multicultural population and performing community services. Technical fluency with Oracle/PeopleSoft, CSU Common Management System or equivalent student information system; Microsoft Office Professional Suite, and Google mail and calendaring programs.
