Position Summary:
Willamette University invites applications for a part-time Certified Medical Assistant position to join the Bishop Wellness Center team.

The Certified Medical Assistant will be responsible for the following:
Back office: Prepares patients and assists clinicians with exams. Administers treatments, medications, and injections following Nurse Practitioner instructions. Performs basic lab tests as instructed or according to protocol. Cleans and stocks exam rooms and maintains the lab area according to CLIA regulations. Subject to moderate exposure to blood borne pathogens and hazardous waste.

Front office: Greets all visitors to Bishop, checking in patients and scheduling appointments for Counseling and Health Services departments. Prepares, files, and maintains medical and counseling records. Prioritizes appointments based on the assessment of need/urgency.

This work involves a moderate degree of complexity and operates within the scope of the Certified Medical Assistant, utilizing established and well-known procedures. Performs duties with minimal supervision. Follows specific instructions. Matters not covered are verified with the supervisor. Position encounters recurring work situations with variations from the norm. Errors in work may affect patient well-being. Involves frequent contact with students, faculty, and staff.

Essential Functions:
The duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following functions, which are not listed, in any particular order of significance:

  • Greets all visitors to Bishop in professional, welcoming manner. Assists patient/ clients in scheduling and checking in for appointments.
  • Prepares patients by taking vital signs, height and weight, and any other appropriate screening tests. Obtains focused, appropriate patient history.
  • Provides various treatments including injections, lab tests, ear irrigations and nebulizer treatments as prescribed by Nurse Practitioners. Provides injections and lab tests as prescribed by outside providers per written orders.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment. This includes cleaning and sterilizing equipment, performing quality control testing on laboratory test materials and monitoring tests, materials and documentation for quality assurance.
  • Performs in-office laboratory tests, and venipuncture for blood work going to outside lab. Arranges for referrals to specialists, radiology and laboratory care. Tracks laboratory and x-ray reports.
  • Maintenance of appropriate and timely clinical documentation (including ICD codes) within the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Adheres to law as it relates to confidentiality of Protected Health Information
  • Maintains exam room supplies and cleans rooms daily with more thorough cleaning once a week or as needed.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school education required
  • Certified to practice as a Medical Assistant in the State of Oregon.
  • Knowledge of modern medical clinic procedures and techniques as required.
  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities and work under pressure and within time constrictions.
  • Ability to use considerable judgment, discretion, tact, and courtesy.
  • Ability to work with a broad scope of confidential information.
  • Possess strong interpersonal and telephone skills. Excellent communication skills using appropriate medical terminology.
  • Ability to work independently as well as establish and maintain harmonious relations with other staff, faculty, and students.
  • Successful clearance of a criminal conviction record check.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Post secondary education
  • One year of CMA experience
  • Experience working in higher education

    This is a 9 month/year, full-time non-exempt position (eligible for overtime) working 40 hours/week. Work schedule will be set by the hiring manager.

    Starting hourly is $14 to $15 depending on experience and background.
