Responsibilities:

The Manager is responsible for overseeing all human resources and faculty affairs operations at the College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH), which currently employs approximately 230 full time faculty and 80 staff members across 30 individual departments, programs, and research centers. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Administration and Finance, the Manager works closely with the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, Diversity and Inclusion and the Dean of CSSH to ensure that human resources and faculty affairs operations are conducted in an efficient and consistent manner.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Working closely with the Dean and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, Diversity and Inclusion, overseeing the annual faculty merit process.
  • Supervising one full time employee (Human Resources Coordinator).
  • Prepare and process all transactions for tenure-line faculty including, recruitment, hiring, leaves, sabbaticals, tenure and promotion. Processing I-9s. Working with legal counsel on H1B and permanent residency applications.
  • Overseeing all hiring and onboarding of part-time faculty, administrative/professional staff, office support staff, research staff, visitors, and non-tenure-track faculty. These duties include processing appointments in the university's HR systems, drafting and distributing appointment letters, and ensuring the employee completes all necessary hiring paperwork.
  • Provide guidance to departments regarding search plans for faculty and works with search participants to ensure compliance with university policies regarding equal opportunity and Title IX
  • Partners closely with University Human Resources Management team on a variety of HR related topics, including performance management, annual salary planning process, and triage of incoming inquiries and directing employees/candidates to the correct office for resolution
  • Developing college-wide training programs and providing support for all HR-related systems and processes for college administrators.
  • Working closely with the Dean's Office finance team on tracking faculty and staff budgets, including tracking hires, resignations, upgrades, and leaves.
  • In consultation with University Human Resources Management, participating in the recruitment of college staff. Reviewing job descriptions for consistency and reasonableness with other positions across the college and evaluating unit business needs. Screening and/or interviewing candidates as requested.
  • Working closely with the Associate Dean of Administration and Finance and Human Resources Management in coordinating college staff development initiatives, which includes collaborating with the newly formed Staff Advisory Council, a small cadre of college staff who serve as advisors to the Dean's Office on matters of staff development and manages related programs and events.
  • Representing the college at university-wide key contact meetings and participating in university-wide committees.
  • Supporting the work of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Inclusion and other senior staff in the college as appropriate.

    Qualifications:

    • A Bachelor’s degree, preferably with course work in business administration or Human Resources
    • A minimum of four years of direct experience in human resources management preferred.
    • Administrative experience in an academic environment preferred
    • Experience working with faculty and the tenure/promotion process preferred.
    • Experience with enterprise human resources systems preferred.
    • Must be a self-starter who demonstrates initiative and has the ability to bring projects/initiatives to fruition.
    • Must possess strong oral and written communication and analytical skills as well as a collaborative style.
    • Proven track record of on-boarding, training and motivating staff
    • The successful candidate will demonstrate professionalism and ability to exercise discretion with all information, especially confidential information is essential
    • Superior communication skills required, effective problem solving skills, with demonstrated skills in written and oral communication
    • The ability to be flexible to rapidly changing demand in a fast paced and complex environment.
    • Strong project management skills required
    • Supervisory experience preferred.
    • Ability to work well under pressure, to prioritize and balance concurrent demands and to work effectively with people from an array of cultural backgrounds.
