The Open Education Consortium (OEC) is looking for a creative thinker with strong leadership skills to join a small, internationally diverse team of educational change-makers to lead planning and implementation of  activities for our second decade. Under the direction and guidance of the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and managing all aspects of the organization, while motivating staff, volunteers and members to advance open education around the world.


Key areas of responsibility:




  • In collaboration with the Board of Directors, develop organizational vision, mission and strategic plans to guide the Consortium’s work;


    Act as the key spokesperson for the organization, including giving speeches, talks, workshops, and presentations at appropriate conferences and meetings around the world;


    Develop and maintain partnerships and strategic relationships with organizations, donors, governments;





  • Develop operational plans in support of OEC’s strategic plan;


    Manage human, financial and other resources to best realize organizational objectives;


    Insure the organization’s operations and policies are in compliance with all applicable laws, including maintaining registration, annual tax filings, labor law compliance;



Programming and services


  • Oversee the implementation of ongoing OEC programs, such as the Open Education Global Conference and Open Education Week;


    Develop and assess projects and programs that strengthen OEC’s mission and global network;


    Oversee membership development, requirements, and relations;



Business Planning and Fundraising


  • Develop strategic program offerings and services to provide base OEC revenue stream;


    In collaboration with the Board of Directors, develop a comprehensive fundraising plan for the organization;


    Cultivate strategic and mutually beneficial relationships with foundations, donors, corporations and other partners;



Professional Requirements:



OEC is a virtual organization, and therefore the location of the position is flexible. Reliable internet and communications access are essential. International travel is required. Specific requirements include:



  • Significant leadership and international experience. Senior level leadership of a nonprofit organization preferred.


    Highly motivated self-starter with the ability to motivate others.


    Understanding of educational landscapes and systems around the world, particularly higher education. Knowledge of or experience with open education highly desirable. Faculty and/or high level educational administration experience desired.


    Experience with organizational and strategic planning, including the successful implementation of complex and diverse projects.


    Solid financial management experience.


    Ability to inclusively lead diverse staff, OEC members and different audiences around the world.


    Excellent speaking and writing skills in English. Abilities in other languages a plus.


    Strong public speaking ability.


    An entrepreneurial, open and collaborative spirit.
