Smith College is accepting applications for a Teacher’s Aide/After School Program/June Program Teacher.  This is a full-time, academic year position (35 hours per week for 43 weeks per year).  This position works with supervising teacher to plan and implement instructional programs, materials and lesson plans; contributes to written progress reports and participates in conferences with parents to communicate students’ progress and issues throughout the year.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instructional Support: Assist with instruction and evaluation of students as assigned by the supervising teacher; work with individuals or small group of students on activities or projects or assignments; share observations of students with the supervising teacher; assess students’ work as designated by the supervising teacher.

Assist in the preparation of the classroom environment: collecting, organizing, and displaying materials and children’s work; setting up activities; displaying children’s work; creating bulletin boards; laminating materials; rearranging classroom furniture as needed for particular activities; clean-up at the end of the day.  Provide clerical support for the supervising teach: organizing student paperwork/folders; record keeping; maintenance of supplies in the classroom.

Supervise students in the classroom and/or on the playground: work cooperatively with school personnel to ensure the safety and well-being of students at all times; anticipate and respond to students’ needs for academic or behavioral assistance and guidance; facilitate daily activities and transitions (e.g. from activity to activity, lunch, recess, arrival and dismissal) to ensure smooth classroom operations.  Other duties may be assigned by the supervising teacher or school administration.

After School Teacher: Plan, design and implement age appropriate activities for students. Collaborate with staff on special events and whole group activities.  Supervise students at all times and work with a Smith Aide to manage the group. Manage student behavior and report any concerns or problem behaviors to the Program Coordinator.  Maintain a daily schedule/routine and attendance. Maintain a daily attendance record and report absences to the Program Coordinator. Report any injuries and/or illnesses to the Program Coordinator.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience: Associate’s Degree in education or related field. Experience working with children in group settings, preferably in classroom settings.

Skills:  Ability to form positive and supportive relationships with children and adults.  Ability to be flexible and work as a member of a team.  Good organizational and interpersonal skills; good computer skills.
