The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seek applicants for the position of Training Coordinator or Senior Training Coordinator, Computational Science and Engineering (CSE). The Training Coordinator or Senior Training Coordinator will coordinate, organize, and administer training programs in computational science and engineering for students and researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This includes training in high-performance computing (HPC) software use and design, application software basics and tutorials, and general use tools and concepts such as version control and scripting languages. Candidates at the senior-level will also be responsible for identifying the training needs in the College of Engineering and designing a training program to meet these demands. This position will report to the Director of Computational Science and Engineering while working closely with Research IT Services in the Office of the Deputy Chief Information Officer (DCIO) and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA).

Specific duties and responsibilities include the following, but may vary depending on position level:
  • Analyze and understand the need for software training for undergraduate and graduate students and other researchers by collaborating with faculty and technical staff across campus. Examples of software for which training may be required include MPI, PETSc, Python, git, etc.
  • Coordinate training of general software skills to enable research and education, such as Software Carpentry and Data Carpentry
  • Organize HPC-specific training, in conjunction with NCSA, XSEDE, and Blue Waters, including campus cluster support for CSE and NCSA-affiliated graduate students, faculty, and researchers.
  • Administer existing training activities by coordinating with students, faculty, and staff to provide the training.
  • Collaborate with CSE and NCSA-affiliated departments and units to implement CSE training program.
  • Develop, sponsor, and deliver special-topics curricula (such as Software Carpentry) as workshops and via integration into traditional coursework.
  • Work towards providing a unified and accessible framework for training at NCSA, leveraging and coordinating with other ongoing training activities and research projects providing training.
  • Coordinate with the Office of the DCIO on related training programs outside CSE and NCSA-affiliated departments and units.
  • Identify gaps in training and plan future training activities based on the needs of research faculty and students.
  • Analyze and report on training programs and support activities.
  • Coordinate advertisements for the training program.
  • Work to promote diversity and inclusion in training activities.
  • Supervise instructional staff, including assignment of work, evaluation of performance, etc.

All successful candidates must have a master's degree in computing, engineering, training/development or other related field as well as experience and/or understanding of computational software/codes and experience in project management or coordination. A passion for training and an understanding of instructional methods and techniques is essential. Also required is a demonstrated proficiency in all forms of communication, time management and organizational skills. Two years of experience with CSE software (three for senior-level candidates) and one year of experience administering/delivering training/education (2 for senior-level candidates) is required. Additionally, senior-level candidates must have experience developing/coordinating training programs.

A preference will be given to candidates who have a PhD in computing, engineering, training/development or other related field, experience with Python (or related) software, experience in a higher education environment, and supervisory experience, including delegation of tasks, evaluation of performance, etc. Experience coordinating training programs is desired for senior-level candidates.
