CHIEF SAFETY OFFICER, Research Compliance, Research Safety (8933/G2817)
The Chief Safety Officer (CSO) is responsible for the coordination and oversight of safety within the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratory (NEIDL). The CSO’s NEIDL activities, roles and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: the oversight of the overall NEIDL safety programs, including the BSL-2, 3 and 4 laboratories; ensuring that safety programs are all developed, implemented, maintained and followed; work with NEIDL leadership, cores and support divisions to implement integrated health and safety concepts into processes and the strong culture of safety; assist the institutional safety committees including the Institutional Biosafety Committee, Laboratory Safety Committee and Radiation Safety Committee develop policies and procedures to promote safety at the NEIDL. The position is also responsible for the implementation and oversight of Select Agent inspections, inventory, and security, acting as the Select Agent Responsible Official (RO). The CSO ensures delivery of safety services to all students, faculty, and staff in the NEIDL.
This position works closely with the other divisions of BU Environmental Health & Safety to ensure consistency in all program areas, and reports to the Associate Vice President for Research Compliance.
Minimum of 5 years of related leadership and safety experience in an academic environment and Master’s degree in the sciences required.
