Job Summary Join Stanford's research administration systems team and help us build applications supporting research at a prominent institution. We are looking for a skilled Product Owner / IT business analyst to help enhance and maintain a complex, home-grown application which supports research at Stanford.

Job Description Reporting to the SeRA Applications Team within University Information Technology (UIT), this position works closely with the business, functional, and technical teams to facilitate and document system requirements for the Stanford Electronic Research Administration (SeRA) application. The SeRA team is responsible for the support, maintenance, and enhancement of a complex, custom-built application with numerous external system integrations facilitating research administration for the university.


A successful candidate will have demonstrated a track record of delivering quality solutions providing high value to customers in a fast-paced environment. The candidate should have experience working with business and technical team members to design, document, deploy, and support new functionality. Activities include requirement elicitation, solution design, solution prototyping, documentation, and roll-out support.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Act as a Product Owner on the Agile scrum team, representing the needs of the business stakeholders
  • Act as a contact for business stakeholders for new system enhancement requests
  • Analyze new business requests and assess feasibility of enhancement requests, system functionality, current system use, and user needs
  • Advise users requiring assistance in solving complex business system problems
  • Elicit and document system enhancement requirements in User Story format with supporting documentation (e.g. mock-ups, prototypes, process maps, detailed requirements, etc.)
  • Organize/facilitate focus groups with internal or external customers to gather feedback on proposed solutions and current system functionality
  • Work closely with business stakeholders to prioritize system requests from multiple groups in the Product Backlog
  • Attend and participate in Agile scrum meetings and provide overviews and clarifications of prioritized User Stories to scrum team
  • Work closely with technical team members to determine technical feasibility of solutions and clarify business needs throughout implementation
  • Work on multiple initiatives simultaneously, with an ability to prioritize work
  • Provide demos of new system functionality to internal and external customers
  • Facilitate user acceptance testing and business sign-off of new functionality
  • Act as a product champion for SeRA, working closely with business partners to continually improve the system
QUALIFICATIONS & MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • 5+ years of experience as a Product Owner/Business Analyst with experience of complex business applications
  • Excellent User Interface design skills, with the ability to create an effective system design
  • Proven problem solving and analytical thinking and ability to approach problems logically and systematically
  • Strong organizational and time management skills as well as dedication to detail and accuracy
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact and bridge business and technical individuals of varying systems expertise and business needs
  • Superior skill in conducting interviews and facilitating group meetings
  • Strong listening, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to design and document complex business systems
  • Technically competent with a strong ability to understand technical problems and solutions
  • Experience and background with using Agile Scrum methodology
  • Experience acting as the Product Owner on an Agile team, writing requirements in user story format and grooming the product backlog
  • Technical understanding of database applications
Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree and five years relevant experience or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Certification as a Scrum Alliance Certified Scrum Product Owner or IIBA Business Analyst or willingness to pursue
  • Background in Higher Education a big plus
