The Archaeology Center is seeking a Student Services Specialist who will provide support for the management of undergraduate and graduate students. S/he will support the Center in its efforts to manage events, seminars, internal funding and community outreach. This position is a key member of the Archaeology Center on matters of student services, both academic and financial, for the undergraduate and interdepartmental graduate programs. Important to this position will be the focus on Archaeology as a major and how to expand the undergraduate program.

This position will also advise undergraduate students with regard to their degree progress. S/he is responsible for tracking and providing counsel regarding major and minor declarations, choosing faculty advisors, and graduation preparedness. S/he will manage the departmental publications, including the Bulletin (annually published list of policies and courses), the Time Schedule (a list of courses published each quarter), the annual newsletter, and manage course scheduling. S/he will serve as a department liaison to a variety of University departments. S/he is a member of committees within the department with faculty and staff, serving as a Student Services representative and expert. A successful candidate will also: manage the department's peer advisor program, hiring and supervising 1-2 undergraduate peer advisors; work closely with faculty to administer student grants; plan and facilitate some academic events (i.e., open houses for undergraduates, award ceremonies, admit weekend, and commencement, etc.); manage postdoc appointments and coordinate visas for visitors; and other duties may be assigned and minimal overtime is required for occasional evening/weekend student events.

CORE DUTIES*:
  • Review documents and forms for completeness, track files for follow up and distribute for review.
  • Research and resolve routine issues, refer complex issues to other staff.
  • Input data, update electronic databases, web sites, literature, and associated materials.
  • May collect, gather and validate data, prepare basic reports.
  • Coordinate logistics for outreach activities, meetings, and events.
  • Respond to routine inquiries from students, faculty, external constituents, and staff.
  • Serve as a subject matter resource to students and other departments.
  • Contribute to general office administration and process improvements.
  • May train and direct day to day activities of student and temporary workers.

    Education & Experience:

    Associates degree and one year of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience. Bachelor's degree and 1-2 years of experience working with students strongly preferred.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Basic office administration skills.
  • Ability to learn compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations. Certifications and Licenses: None PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Frequently sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Occasionally stand, walk, twist, use fine manipulation, grasp, use a telephone, write by hand, sort and file paperwork, lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
