Position Information: The Sr. Custodian performs a variety of custodial/housekeeping tasks to care, maintain and preserve campus facilities. Responsible to clean, dust, strip, wax, sweep, mop, polish, disinfect, sanitize, wash, vacuum, replenish restrooms, and remove refuse/recycling throughout campus facilities, not limited to but including offices, classrooms, laboratories, auditoriums, restrooms, lounges, hallways, residential facilities, conference rooms, elevators, stairwells, exteriors, etc. May work independently or as a part of a team in assigned work areas.

Facilities Services is one of the largest departments at UC Riverside employing nearly 400 career employees. The department maintains buildings, facilities and landscape totaling over 6 million square feet across 1,350 acres of campus. This posting is for multiple openings, various shifts available (weekends; early morning, morning, evening or graveyard shifts).

Minimum Requirements: Six months of experience in custodial/housekeeping operations or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Ability to read write and communicate effectively in the English language with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to work effectively; following through on assignments with minimal direction and fluctuating workload.

Ability to work a flexible schedule (weekends and holidays; early morning, morning, evening or graveyard shifts), as needed to accommodate campus event schedules).

Knowledge and experience in the safe use of a wide variety of equipment and machinery common to custodial services including, but not limited to; stripping/buffing machines, vacuums, steam pressure washers, wet/dry shop vacuums, carpet extractors (bonnet, dry, hydro extraction) cleaning machines, raiding flooring cleaning machines, squeegees, brushes, etc.

Knowledge and experience in safe use of cleaning chemicals, their interactions, danger signs and disposal methods.

Physical requirements: ability to perform heavy/physically demanding tasks which require pushing, pulling, walking, standing, reaching, bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling, squatting, stretching, reaching above shoulder level and lifting up to 75 pounds. Ability to safely remove and replace heavy linen carts, refuse/recycling dumpsters from a loading dock routinely using a manual or mechanical cart/equipment. Ability to work indoors or outdoors with variable temperatures and conditions; including dust, smog, rain or temperatures ranging from high heat with humidity, to cold conditions.

Hired candidate must pass a background check through the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); must obtain or possess a valid CA Driver License in accordance with California Department of Motor Vehicles; must participate in the campus DMV pull; and successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination.

Preferred Qualifications: Basic knowledge in safe and proper procedures when hazardous materials are suspected; knowledge of safe and proper methods to clean up and dispose of biohazards and chemicals such as rodent droppings, vomit, blood, raw sewage or chemicals.

Ability to read and understand the proper use of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).

Ability to work safely on ladders up to eighteen feet high.

Prior experience and ability to prioritize work orders, routine work, emergency requests and ability to choose the proper materials or equipment to accomplish work in the most expeditious and safe manner.

Knowledge of applicable federal and state regulations governing areas related to the responsibilities of the job, including SB-198 Illness and Injury Prevention Program (IIPP).

Willingness and ability to work scheduled, unscheduled and emergency overtime.

Experience working with a diverse student, staff, faculty and visitor population and ability to provide exemplary customer service.

Knowledge of UC/UCR policies and systems.
