About the Job

The Stanford School of Medicine is looking for someone with development and operations expertise to join the Research IT team in the Office of Information Resources and Technology. You can learn more about the Research IT group and various project work at https://researchit.stanford.edu.

Work with small teams of developers and data center personnel delivering the next generation of infrastructure, tools, and services used by researchers, research participants, patients, and clinicians to collect and analyze data, make discoveries, and improve patient care and outcomes. There is a nice mix of interesting new small projects, in addition to rewarding long-term infrastructure to build out.

You will be at the boundary between the software developers and the operations team making it all happen both on premise and in the cloud using Google Cloud Platform (GCP). You will need to be able to move fluidly between those roles and communicate effectively with all of them.

About You
  • Have built web applications and understand software development
  • Had operational roles and understand how to provision and manage live production environments
  • Attention to detail to make sure everything is done correctly and safely
  • Passionate about system and application security, and know how protect sensitive data
  • Understand networking, firewalls, load balancers
  • Understand Linux system administration, provisioning and management
  • Managed databases such as PostgreSQL for security, audit, backup, availability
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems for highly technical applications and infrastructure
  • Communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical project stakeholders
  • Quickly and easily teach yourself new technologies as needed
  • Create well-written documentation and explanations
  • Bachelor's degree and five years experience or relevant combination

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

We are looking for a motivated DevOps engineer who wants to participate in all aspects of building, operationalizing and automating excellent IT infrastructure both on premise and in the cloud. The successful candidate will have
  • The drive and self-motivation to learn all layers of a complex infrastructure stack and the ability to deep-dive into specifics as needed
  • A passion for automation and reliable, repeatable processes
  • A deep understanding of system and application security
  • Expertise with Bash and/or Python programming
  • Experience and knowledge to use Google Cloud Platform safely and effectively
  • Proficiency working with tools such as TeamCity, Ansible/Puppet, Docker, GitHub, Kubernetes and Splunk
  • Experience managing Java-based application stacks
  • Ability to quickly teach yourself new domains and technologies as needed
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
  • Attention to detail to make sure everything is done correctly and securely
  • Experience designing, developing, testing, and deploying web applications
  • Expertise in networking, firewalls, load balancers
  • Expertise in Linux system administration, provisioning and management
  • Expertise in managing databases such as PostgreSQL for security, audit, backup, availability
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems for highly technical applications and infrastructure
  • Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical clients
  • Ability to lead activities on structured team development projects
  • Ability to select, adapt, and effectively use a variety of programming methods
  • Create well-written documentation and explanations
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently sit, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, writing by hand.
  • Rarely use a telephone, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
