Job Summary

The Recreation and Athletics Specialist 2 (RS2)/Outdoor Programs is primarily responsible for planning, organizing, scheduling and implementing field leadership and student development on EPIC trips and activities. This position works with the Associate Director of Campus Recreation-Outdoor Program Manager to plan and implement all EPIC Adventures field-based and co-curricular programs. The position directly oversees day and weekend trips that require the management and consistent exercise of discretion of specific objective hazards (e.g. whitewater, roped climbing, avalanche terrain, etc.). EPIC Adventures field programs include backpacking, rock climbing, ice climbing, mountaineering, canoeing, kayaking, whitewater rafting, stand up paddle-boarding, skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, cycling, and other activities.

The position will develop and implement field staff curricula involving leadership, judgment, decision-making, risk management, activity specific technical skills and other topics. Those topics include wilderness medicine certification, the study of hydrodynamics in a whitewater setting, and environmental stewardship through Leave-No-Trace principles for more than 30 EPIC student staff each quarter.

EPIC Adventures relies heavily on student development and the mentoring process with both student staff and participants. Each trip and activity will include sessions dealing with trip logistics, problem solving, team development and individual and group counseling. In the field, many factors come into play and the RS2 must be prepared to deal with unplanned issues, both in field and personal skills as the backcountry can be intimidating to newcomers. The RS2 will facilitate daily debriefings with student staff discussing topics such as risk management, budgeting of time and money, group dynamics involving emotional and physical safety of the group. The RS2 will lead discussions outlining the importance of balancing academics with outside-the-classroom interests. This will create a more holistic student with a better understanding of how participating in EPIC activities can improve their academic success. Each EPIC trip will include pre and post briefings on the trip goals, objectives and desired learning outcomes.

Other key responsibilities of this position will include supervising all student trip-leader and raft-guide training; assuring all equipment for outgoing trips is accounted for both before departure and upon return; help develop and implement student employee leadership programs and initiatives; and monitor, evaluate and schedule assessment planning in the area of student employee development. The RS2 is the key evaluator and mentor for the student staff involved with the trip function in EPIC Adventures, the largest internal program in our EPIC catalog. Student counseling, advising in field and related topics, and policy and procedure development are key components of the position

This position will be responsible for scheduling of EPIC fleet vehicles and maintenance; supervising the driver-training program in EPIC while assisting the Associate Director of Campus Recreation-Outdoor Program Manager in preparing budgets and a purchase plan for replacement equipment based on program needs.

The RS2 will assist the Associate Director of Campus Recreation-Outdoor Program Manager in the development and training of EPIC student staff in risk management and emergency procedures; if certified as instructor level, instruct or support other instructors in certification courses that may include Leave-No-Trace Trainer, Wilderness First Responder, Whitewater Rescue Technician, and Single Pitch or Top Rope Instructor; develop and instruct in the proper use of the EPIC Emergency Action Plan (EAP); coordinate training and protocol in the use of the EPIC satellite/emergency phone system; maintain the inventory and distribution of emergency and first aid supplies; and collect and analyze data in these areas.

Conditions of Employment

This is a 100% time, 12-months per year position with an alternate work schedule. Nights and/or weekend hours should be expected and will be required to fulfill the duties of this position. Weekly work shift will vary throughout the year as activities related to the Program are scheduled. Position will regularly oversee and participate in single day and weekend programs (varies throughout the year). Position may oversee and participate in an occasional extended program (multi-day). Travel for programs is required; valid driver's license and proof of insurance are required; ability to operate/drive cars, trucks, and vans with trailers is required.

This position may be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value. This position at times may also be responsible for students/participants with special needs.

Physical Demands

Position responsibilities entail unique physical and mental demands, including the following: frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending over, reaching overhead, kneeling, balancing, pushing/pulling, lifting/carrying up to 75 pounds, thinking analytically, assessing risk, concentrating on tasks, making decisions, examining/observing details; occasional crawling, climbing, crouching, lifting/carrying up to 100 pounds or over; continuous use of hands/arms/legs, grasping, eye/hand coordination, fine manipulation, talking/effective verbal communication, handling stress/emotions, remembering names/details, adjusting to changes, and maintaining stamina throughout the workday. Environmental factors include: working inside/outside, working within various and changing temperatures, humidity, dry/wet conditions, high places, dirty/dusty/odorous environments, uneven ground.

Required Qualifications:

Specific Position Requirements:
1) Bachelor's Degree required (Recreation, Outdoor Education or related field)
2) Thirty (30) documented field-weeks in outdoor leadership positions
3) Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness EMT
4) At least two of the following professional certifications (PCIA/AMGA, ACA, LNT Master Educator, WRT) or the ability to obtain two or more within one year of employment
5) One year of professional experience in outdoor recreation or related setting.
6) Instructor-trainer level ability in whitewater rafting and rock climbing
7) Candidate must demonstrate interest, ability and/or experience promoting cultural competency, universal accessibility and/or diversity.
8) Competence with technology including basic computer skills, digital still & video cameras, email, web browsers
9) Valid driver's license, and ability to operate/drive cars, trucks, and vans with trailers.

Preferred Qualifications:

1) Master's degree in Recreation, Outdoor Education or related field
2) Experience supervising college-age student employees
3) Experience developing and implementing outdoor skill training programs
4) Experience working in a college or university setting.
