Primary Function of Organization Unit: Founded in 2003, the UNC/NC State Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering is a unique collaboration between North Carolina's two flagship universities: The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) and North Carolina State University (NC State). The nationally ranked UNC Hospitals and School of Medicine at UNC-CH provide an excellent clinical environment for interactions and translation, College of Engineering at NC State, ranked one of the finest engineering and computer science schools in the world, offers state-of-the-art facilities for students and faculty engaged in vital areas of research and technology transfer. In addition to the resources of the Joint Department, the Closed-Loop Engineering for Advanced Rehabilitation (CLEAR) core (the former Rehabilitation Engineering Core; http://rec.bme.unc.edu/), Human Movement Science Program at UNC-CH (http://hmsc.unc.edu), the Brain Research Imaging Center at UNC-CH, the NSF ERC ASSIST Center at NC State, and NC State College of Veterinary Medicine provide excellent opportunities for Rehabilitation Engineering faculty to develop multidisciplinary and translational collaborations. Essential Job Duties: The UNC/NC State Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) (www.bme.unc.edu) is seeking to fill a 9-month tenure-track position in Rehabilitation Engineering at the rank of Associate or Assistant Professor. The Rehabilitation Engineering track of our department involves basic research in human neuromechanics, development and assessment of advanced technologies to restore sensorimotor function in individuals with physical disabilities, and translation of novel technologies to clinics and end users. Our interests include, but are not limited to prosthetics and orthotics, wearable technologies, virtual reality, neuromotor rehabilitation, neural engineering, biomechanics, and computer modeling. We encourage candidates conducting basic and applied research in the areas of: (1) biodynamics of human locomotion, (2) wearable robotics and neuroprosthetics, (3) motor control and motor learning focused on human-machine interactions, and (4) innovative therapeutic or assistive technologies with the potential to transform rehabilitation practice from the clinic to the community. Outstanding candidates in other areas of Rehabilitation Engineering will be considered. This position will serve as core faculty in Biomedical Engineering with participation in both undergraduate and graduate instruction expected. Position will be filled at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank, depending on credentials and qualifications. Anticipated starting date is January 2018.
Minimum Education/Experience: Ph.D. in Biomedical or equivalent in closely related field.
Department Required Skills: * Successful candidates must have a strong commitment to academic and research excellence. * Successful applicants will have already established a highly competitive independent research program, or will otherwise possess the clear potential to do so. * The candidate must have an interest in translating novel technologies into clinical investigation, and have the ability to collaborate with other basic researchers or clinical investigators. * Excellent verbal and writing skills are required
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: * Clinical experience working with patient populations is a plus. * Evidence of resourcefulness in securing funding for research * Candidates must have demonstrated the ability to lead collaborative multi-disciplinary initiatives and projects. * Candidates should have a commitment to mentoring students. * Candidates must have demonstrated outstanding ability as a communicator, including publishing and presenting research in national and international forums.
