Under the direction of the program manager, scholarship programs, the educational adviser is responsible for providing support to approximately 105 undergraduate scholarship recipients who are exceptional students with financial need.  The caseload includes scholars from the Cooke College Scholarship program and the Cooke Undergraduate Transfer program.  This position is responsible for providing academic advising and guidance regarding post-graduate planning, as well as assistance with team programming and curriculum development.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Provides ongoing educational advising and support to new and continuing Undergraduate Transfer Scholars and College Scholars by telephone, email and online tools. Provides guidance to scholars on utilizing campus resources, time management strategies, and connecting with other members of the Cooke network.  In addition, the adviser serves as a resource on higher education opportunities (e.g., internships, study abroad, graduate school) to position the scholar for fulfilling professional careers. 
  2. Collaborates with the Career Development Specialist and other members of the Career Development Team to expand and implement curriculum to support junior and senior students in the Cooke College Scholarship and all scholars in the Undergraduate Transfer program to include individual advising resources, webinars, pertinent readings, and shared resources.
  3. Monitors academic performance and progress toward an undergraduate degree for scholars on her/his caseload by engaging in regular reviews of transcripts, academic course plans, semester updates, and Annual Reports.  Communicates foundation requirements and expectations.  Proactively works with students facing difficulties to create strategies for academic success.  Communicates concerns about students to Program Manager and makes recommendations for changes in scholars’ status when appropriate.
  4. Reviews scholar requests for program changes and extensions, and makes recommendations to the Program Manager based on Foundation policies. Oversees approval process, including correspondence, data entry, and appropriate communication with scholarship administration team.
  5. Advises new recipients of the Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship on decisions regarding financial aid offers and four-year college selection.
  6. Conducts 2-3 trips throughout the year to visit scholars for a one-on-one visit, high-volume campus visit, and/or regional event in order to provide in-person guidance to a scholar(s) in need, promote the scholar community, and/or build a support network on campus.
  7. Collaborates with Events and Communications staff as appropriate; including to develop and deliver appropriate curriculum for scholars at foundation events and to identify scholars for media and videos.
  8. Actively participates in foundation meetings and works collaboratively with others to complete projects and goals. 
  9. Provides help when needed by other members of the foundation staff on all program-related matters.
  10. Other tasks as assigned.

  JOB QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  1. Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree in student advising, career counseling, higher education, or related field preferred.
  2. Minimum of three years of experience in a college or university, scholarship organization, foundation, or other relevant setting.
  3. Experience working with undergraduate level high-achieving students preferred.  Demonstrated knowledge of graduate school and career advising processes.
  4. High level of written and oral communication skills and abilities and staff and interpersonal relations.
  5. Substantial knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  6. A strong detail orientation and ability to work independently and simultaneously on multiple projects within close, overlapping and/or conflicting deadlines.
