Job description

Duties: Reporting to the Senior Director of Communications and Stewardship within Penn Medicine's Department of Communications and Stewardship, the Communications and Stewardship Writer develops and leads stewardship and communication projects for Penn Medicine's most important donors and prospects. A seasoned and skilled writer, with a gracious style and comfort with scientific topics, he/she will possess strong project management abilities to retain oversight of multiple projects. These can include: proposals, brochures, newsletter articles, speeches, acknowledgement letters, and stewardship reports, including scholarship funds, prize funds, research funds, and endowed professorships. The successful candidate has the demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects and work effectively with databases and contact management systems. A key contributor to our highly collaborative department, the Communications and Stewardship Writer offers proven team-building skills and an interest in innovative practices and solutions that improve our work and energize our group as well as our internal customers.


Write stewardship reports, proposals, special correspondence, newsletter articles, event materials, speeches, and other communications that inform our donors.

Use desktop design software to create and edit projects.

Proofread and copy edit other projects within the Department of Communications and Stewardship.

Develop an understanding of the educational, research, clinical, and financial needs and goals of
Penn Medicine.

Execute multiple projects, providing status reports, and alerting supervisor for assistance as appropriate.

Coordinate design and other vendor activities on a project basis.

Coordinate efforts of other staff members when needed on larger projects.

Serve as quality control editor for other stewardship staff.

Keep informed of trends in fundraising and medical communications and apply them to projects.

Qualifications: BA/BS; 2 to 3 years' experience as a professional writer required, with at least two years' direct experience in writing for fundraising, higher education, health care, or a related area. 3-5 years experience preferred.

Portfolio that demonstrates ability to write clearly and persuasively on a variety of topics, with the ability to vary style as needed, from an executive tone, to mass appeals.

Comfort with scientific topics.

In addition to using Microsoft Office Suite, experience in using desktop design software such as InDesign.The ability to work effectively with databases and contact management systems.

Web and social media experience a plus.Project management experience.

Excellent command of language, grammar, spelling, with a good eye for detail.

Experience in evaluating graphic design.

Team-building skills with knowledge of the academic environment preferred, and the ability to relate comfortably to alumni and volunteers, as well as to faculty members, administrators, and staff.

Occasional lifting 25 lbs. or less.
