The Department of Pharmacology at the University of Virginia seeks either a Laboratory and Research Technician 2 or a Laboratory Specialist (depending on qualifications) to assist in the operation of a mass spectrometry facility. The successful candidate will predominantly be preparing and analyzing small molecules (drugs, lipids, amino acids, etc) for multiple internal and external investigators and maintaining equipment as part of the facility. Specific tasks may include solid-phase and liquid-liquid extractions, development of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry methods, and analysis of "-omics" datasets. While some relevant experience is desired, training will be provided.
To be considered for the Laboratory and Research Technician 2 position, a Bachelor's degree in biology, analytical chemistry, chemistry, biochemistry, or a related discipline is required, as well as at one to two years of laboratory experience (which may include student experience) in an academic or industrial laboratory setting. Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint and Excel) and statistical/bioinformatics analyses is also required. Further, to be competitive for the Laboratory and Research Technician 2 position, the incumbent must be able to provide complex technical support for projects and engage in complex scientific experiments, must be able to handle complex administrative and logistical tasks, and must be able to operate under supervision with a degree of independence when following set protocols and procedures.
To be considered for the Laboratory Specialist position, a Bachelor's degree in biology, analytical chemistry, chemistry, biochemistry, or a related discipline is required, as well as at least 3 years laboratory experience in an academic or industrial laboratory setting. Relevant student experience will be considered. Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint and Excel) and statistical/bioinformatics analyses is also required. Further, to be competitive for the Laboratory Specialist position, incumbent must be able to perform complex lab and research related tasks, acting as a specialist on research methods, equipment, and bioinformatics specific to the investigations in the lab. Incumbent must also be able to perform daily activities without supervision and must be able to train others on work processes and policies. The Lab Specialist would additionally provide EHS and other institutional compliance management.
This position is restricted and contingent upon the continuation of funding.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Experience with sample preparation for chromatography and/or mass spectrometry
2. Experience with chromatography and/or mass spectrometry.
3. Ability to synthesize information, provide advice, and address needs independently.
4. Knowledge of general lab procedures, basic safety precautions, and lab equipment.
5. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
