Job Description

We are currently seeking a new team member to job our engineering department in a position that is centered on designing transfer die tooling using CAD Solid Edge. The ideal Tool Design Engineer candidate will demonstrate a positive attitude, strong organizational skills, attention to detail, drive to meet deadlines, and a desire to contribute to the company long-term. Additionally, he/she will have proven self-directing work skills, past tool design experience, and a desire to work in a team-based atmosphere.

Duties will include all activities related to designing effective and robust tooling that will meet or exceed the customers' requirements as well as Metal Flow's expectations for craftsmanship. The individual in this role will be responsible for tool design and implementation during new tool development as well as for playing a lead role in continuous improvement activities of both new and well established jobs. Design engineers also play a key role in tool verification, assembly, and production development. Individuals applying for this role should be energized by a fast-paced automotive environment while maintaining attention to detail, working constructively with others, and demonstrating commitment to driving and following processes.

The candidate must be able to work with minimal supervision while meeting deadlines and designing high quality tooling that will be successful in the production process. Individuals in this role must demonstrate an openness to learning, have a desire to problem-solve with creativity, and contribute to the growth of the organization. Candidates will need to have a background in transfer and/or progressive die tool deign for the metal forming process, so they can easily step into this open position and contribute to the objectives of the team.

This role is primarily responsible for the following activities:
  • Actively participate in product launch activities as needed in the APQ Process.
  • Offer insight and input in product development activities that will ensure products will be designed and manufactured efficiently, to print, on time, and at or below budget.
  • Create robust tooling designs using CAD system(s) while embracing lean manufacturing principles.
  • Take ownership of:
    • New tools by engaging throughout the development process and assisting others in achieving successful run at rate.
    • Existing and/or re-designed tools by working productively with production team members on continuous improvement efforts.
  • Drive the re-design or modification of existing jobs for improved performance in cooperation with other departments and suppliers.
  • Work with the toolroom and external suppliers to place tool orders and ensure on-time delivery of tooling.
  • Verify that tools are complete and to print at the time of delivery, and participate in tool assembly when appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • 4 year degree, or equivalent experience.
  • 5 years of on the job experience.

Preferred Experience and Skills:
  • Computer Software (Microsoft products), Strong Mechanical Aptitude, Lean Manufacturing Training/Exposure, Deep Draw and/or Progressive Metal Forming Process, Transfer and/or Progressive Die Tool Design, CAD (Solid Edge), & APQP.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, strong interpersonal skills, effective verbal and written communication abilities, heightened attention to detail, and ability to follow-through and problem-solve with creativity.
