RESEARCH TECHNICIAN II - NEUROSURGERY

  • Perform a variety of technical duties in a Duke University laboratory to include performance of routine tests and examinations, assistance in the set-up of experiments and the collection and recording of data.
  • Procure and set-up equipment, instruments and materials used in performing scheduled tests or experiments.
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of routine laboratory records and maintains accurate data records. Review work of lower level laboratory employees and assist in the training of new personnel.
  • Restock supplies and materials as required.
  • Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform experiments associated with immunology, serology and/or virology.
  • Operates and maintains basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, analytical balance, incubator, scintillation counter, spectrophotometer, light microscope, and/or utilizes laminar flow hood.
  • Maintains and makes minor adjustments to equipment, e.g. calibrating, alignment. Operates lab computers for data entry. These may require labeling and assay methods such as ELISA, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, MACs bead isolations and other associated specialized laboratory methods including tissue culture and molecular biology techniques.
  • May also perform separation, identification and purification methods for identifying cell populations. May utilize in vivo models in experiments. Following experimental protocols, monitors animals and maintains health records in accordance with Duke University, USDA and AALAC protocols and guidelines.
  • Sacrifices and dissects animal remains as required. Prepare tissue specimens for cutting, histochemical techniques, stain sections with dye and mount on slides.
  • Use microtome to obtain sections for mounting. Monitors inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, counts orders upon receipt.
  • Prepare culture media, chemicals, solutions and reagents. Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.
  • Clean and sterilize instruments, glassware and equipment. Obtain urine, blood and other specimens and label and prepare for laboratory analysis.
