Medical Resident Year 1 (Diagnostic Medicine/Pathobiology)

General Description of Position: The Department of Diagnostic Medicine/Pathobiology with the College of Veterinary Medicine offers a three-year residency, which fulfills, in part, ACVP board eligibility requirements.
Those who are qualified and choose to pursue graduate studies subsequent to residency training are encouraged to do so through the College of Veterinary Medicine graduate programs. Two or more additional years are usually needed to complete requirements for the MS. degree.

The residency program has two primary goals.
1. To prepare residents to successfully complete the clinical pathology certifying examination administered by The American College of Veterinary Pathologists.
2. To educate residents so they obtain a solid understanding of the laboratory methods and pathologic bases of diseases to prepare them for careers as veterinary clinical pathologists.
To meet these goals, the vast majority of their effort will be devoted to clinical pathology training including teaching, service, and small group discussions and a small amount of effort in other scholarly activity including, but not limited to presentations at national meetings, case reports, reviews, textbook chapters, and clinical investigations.  Diversity and Inclusion: Kansas State University embraces diversity, and promotes inclusion in every sector of the institution.   • Residents will participate in and support clinical pathology service activities, principally cytology, hematology, urinalysis, and clinical chemistry consultation. Residents will interact with faculty, technologists, and students in other areas such as microbiology, immunology, and anatomic pathology.
  • Residents will effectively communicate test results and interpretations to university and private practitioners.
  • After obtaining sufficient proficiency, residents will be available by phone to consult with night clinical pathology interns or clinicians regarding night or weekend laboratory requests.
  • Residents will be available for after-hours requests for the analysis of samples that require the input of a clinical pathologist.
  • Residents will be the primary contact for cytology, some hematology, chemistry and cross-matches submitted after hours to the clinical pathology laboratory.
  • Residents will be expected to help mentor KSVDL interns while in the clinical pathology laboratory
  • Residents are expected to assist faculty members in teaching all clinical pathology courses in the veterinary curriculum
  • After demonstration of ability, residents will present didactic lectures to veterinary students and lead case-based learning sessions.
  • Residents will be the primary instructors for DMP 785.
  • Residents are encouraged to participate in local, regional, and/or national meetings.
  • Residents are expected to assist mentoring of KSVDL interns
  • Residents will attend and participate in seminars, clinical rounds, slide reviews, and journal clubs that facilitate training in veterinary clinical pathology. Most important among these are the weekly Clinical Pathology Rounds (CPRs) in which case material, current literature, and textbooks are reviewed with clinical pathologists. Third-year residents will have a major role in organizing CPRs.
  • Each resident is expected to be the primary contributor or author of the following.
  • A case at an ASVCP Slide Review Session.
  • A platform presentation at an ASVCP/ACVP Annual Meeting (Dept. supported)
  • A platform presentation at an additional annual meeting (e.g. SEVPAC or AAVLD)
  • Submit at least one manuscript suitable for publication in a refereed journal during the residency.
  • If opportunities for the cases or projects for the ASVCP and/or ACVP meetings are limited, submission of a manuscript suitable for publication may be used to substitute for the presentation. 
Required Minimum Qualifications: D.V.M. or equivalent degree is required.

International students must demonstrate proficiency in English by earning a satisfactory score on the TOEFL or demonstrate proficiency during an interview.  Preferred Qualifications: A year of post-DVM clinical or diagnostic experience is desirable, but not required.
