Rutgers University–New Brunswick, a preeminent public research university and the flagship campus of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, seeks nominations and applications for the position of Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.  The Provost is the Chief Academic Officer of Rutgers University-New Brunswick, the historic heart of Rutgers, a premier land-grant institution and a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU).

Founded in 1766, Rutgers University is the eighth oldest college in the nation. Rutgers University–New Brunswick is the flagship campus, enrolling more than 42,000 students (approximately 33,650 undergraduates and 8,600 graduate students), employing approximately 10,000 full- and part-time faculty and staff, and operating annually at a budget of over $1.7 billion.  Rutgers–New Brunswick is a member of the Big Ten Athletic Conference as well as the Big Ten Academic Alliance.

The Provost will report directly to the Chancellor of Rutgers University-New Brunswick and will work closely with the academic leadership of other Rutgers campuses and academic units.  As Chief Academic Officer, he or she will work closely with the Deans of the various schools and the Directors of the several research centers and institutes in New Brunswick.  The Provost will collaborate with the Chancellor and provide leadership for the academic enterprise; manage the academic budget and catalyze interdisciplinary collaborations across campus; review and approve recommendations for faculty promotion and tenure; and sit on the University-wide Promotion Review Committee.  The Provost will represent Rutgers-New Brunswick at the AAU Provost meetings and the Big Ten Academic Alliance.

The ideal candidate for this position will be a noted scholar in his or her own discipline, suitable for a tenured full Professor position at Rutgers-New Brunswick.  He or she must be able to work effectively in a decentralized environment and collaborate with the academic deans to enhance academic excellence across all units.  It is expected that the candidate will have had significant and increasing administrative responsibility in a complex educational environment, preferably including experience as a department Chair and/or Dean.   He or she must understand the environment of limited economic growth that pervades public higher education and must be adept at developing and embracing innovative strategies for allocation of institutional resources with a view toward solidifying Rutgers-New Brunswick’s trajectory for long-term comprehensive excellence.  Above all, the successful candidate will have a strong love of learning and the academic enterprise, an insatiable intellectual curiosity, and a deep understanding of America’s public research institutions and the life-changing opportunity they provide to a wide variety of learners across the social spectrum.  [A more complete ‘Leadership Statement’ can be found at http://nbchancellor.rutgers.edu/provostsearch].

While applications and nominations will be accepted until a new Provost is hired, applicants are encouraged to submit their materials to our consultant at the address below by October 1, 2017 to assure optimal consideration.  Application materials should include a current resume and a letter of interest.
