Research Technician - Gnotobiotic Core

Primary Function of Organization Unit: The mission of the Department of Population Health and Pathobiology is to recruit, train, inspire, and graduate Doctors of Veterinary Medicine of exemplary knowledge, skill, and character. In order to maintain the intellectual and professional climate necessary to accomplish this mission, the department's faculty will advance veterinary medical science through innovative basic and applied research, inspired mentoring of students (undergraduate, professional, residents, and graduate), excellence in clinical and diagnostic services, and innovative extension and engagement activities. The mission of this unit it to promote enhanced multidisciplinary digestive disease research.
Essential Job Duties: This position will assist the manager in all of the duties of Gnotobiotic Core operation including: Animal husbandry for germ-free and gnotobiotic mice housed inside flexible film isolators including monitoring integrity of the isolators, checking animal health conditions and behaviors and documenting abnormal activities, changing cages, filling water bottles; packaging food to be sterilized by autoclaving; filling large bottles of water to be sterilized by autoclaving; preparing cylinders to be autoclaved which contain supplies that will be brought into isolators; assist the manager with bringing supplies into isolators; general housekeeping inside and outside isolators; assist the manager with inventory of supplies and ordering supplies and assist manager with assembling isolators from component parts and maintaining parts in usable condition. This is a time limited position ~
Department Required Skills: Must be able to communicate effectively with the manager and the director of the Gnotobiotic Core. Must be able to understand instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters. Required to wear a full-face respirator as needed. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Previous work experience with handling and restraining rodents.
