Primary Function of Organization Unit: Platform Compute Service (PCS) is in the Shared Services unit of the Office of Information Technology division at NC State University. The PCS team is responsible for the physical and virtual server infrastructure in support of education, research, and administrative computing. This includes the Enterprise Virtualization and Virtual Computing Lab (VCL) services hosting over a thousand production systems on campus including core services, ERP middleware, departmental servers, and on-demand computing for students and researchers. The team is a major contributor to the Apache VCL project, an open source cloud computing software for delivering dedicated, custom compute environments through a self service interface.
Essential Job Duties: The Systems Programmer Specialist develops and maintains enterprise level solutions for supporting the Enterprise Virtualization and Virtual Computing Lab (VCL) services. The Specialist is responsible for working with the Manager, Project Leads, Team Members, and OIT units in order to implement solutions in automation for provisioning, deprovisioning, system deployment, resource reporting, and resource management through an on-demand web interface. The Specialist will: - Work with a diverse set of customers to provide strong analysis and programming support, solve technical issues, work with PCS team to provide successful automation solutions to meet growing campus computing needs; - Produce deliverables for all phases of the software development lifecycle from functional requirements through final implementation; - Analyze, debug, and modify existing code supporting the VCL service Provide status reports to manager and functional project leads as required; - Manage daily operations of VCL service; - Provide timely production support, respond to customer requests in expected time frame based on SLA's; - Provide Enterprise Virtualization support for the campus VM hosting service, VMware specific; - Provide shared support of x86 infrastructure supporting the OIT services.
Department Required Skills: A high degree of programming knowledge and object oriented design skills; strong working knowledge with interpreted programming languages; experience in virtualization technologies, and strong technical solutions skills. Ability to work independently and within a team to efficiently identify and solve technical problems that can impact critical campus systems. Strong organizational and communication skills are essential. Thorough understanding of the project development life cycle, including but not limited to development, testing, documentation, approval and post maintenance. Attention to detail and ability to form strong relationships between team members, customers, and management is essential. Strong programming, operating systems, and systems administration skills are required for this position to achieve the desired performance levels needed to run successful computing services. The ability to provide expertise and consulting to committees, managers, and directors on related services and activities. The ability to provide comprehensive solutions in resolving issues and challenges to support the demanding requirements of University academic and business processes.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: BS in computer science or related discipline. Minimum of 3 years of Interpreted programming language experience in a production environment, specifically object oriented design in Perl, Python, PHP, or C/C++. Minimum of 5 years of Linux and Windows operating system management experience in a production environment. Experience with configuration management systems, such as Puppet, Ansible, SCCM. Experience with Private and Public Cloud Computing solutions. Certifications in VMware, RedHat, Microsoft is a plus.
