Primary Function of Organization Unit: The National Science Foundation Center for Integrated Pest Management (NSFCIPM) was established in 1991 to serve a lead role in technology development, program implementation, training, and public awareness for IPM at the state, regional, and national level. NSFCIPM fosters the development and implementation of pest management programs. NSF CIPM is an Industry / University Cooperative Research Center, which works to support and further Integrated Pest Management through the evaluation of emerging technologies, information management and dissemination, environmental stewardship, estimation of economic consequences, resistance management tools and systems, and integration of disciplinary expertise. The Center manages grants programs for the USDA, develops regional and national priorities through workshops and stakeholder meetings, and develops and maintains large databases and database applications for USDA, EPA, and Ministries of Agriculture in Europe, Africa and the Caribbean.
Essential Job Duties: The incumbent will conduct independent and original research in the United States and in China in order to better understand the biology and phenology of Bactrocera fruit fly species. The research will focus efforts in identifying key factors that will serve to increase the USDA's ability to protect commodities of interest from highly invasive Chinese fruit flies. The incumbent will also provide statistical analysis support for projects involved in assessing pest risk and the uncertainty of risk. The research performed will align with similar work being performed in the US and China and with the regulatory mission of the USDA Animal Plant Health Inspection Service. The incumbent will be expected to present research findings at professional meetings and to extend these findings to key stakeholders, including plant protection officials at state and federal agencies. *This position will travel internationally 20-30% of the time.*
Minimum Education/Experience: Position requires a Ph.D. in entomology, plant pathology/nematology or related field with additional experience with data management, statistical software, field work, population biology, or invasive/endangered species management.
Department Required Skills: Experience in computer word processing, spread sheet, mapping and other computer-related skills. High proficiency in statistical data analyses (design of experiments, ANOVA, multivariate analysis, and spatial statistics) in addition to Graphic Information System (GIS). The ability to work closely with colleagues and other federal employees to manage projects. Experience in management of technical contributors and staff. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Must be able to travel internationally 20-30% of the time.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: At least three years post Ph.D. experience in pest risk analysis and integrated pest management studying Bactrocera species biology, distribution and invasiveness potential is preferred. Experience with projects focused in China and extensive experience in collaborating with Chinese scientists is preferred. Candidates that are fluent in Mandarin and English, both written and spoken are strongly preferred.
