Primary Function of Organization Unit: Agriculture in today's world is a business, whether it be processing and marketing agricultural products, farming, or supplying agricultural inputs. Consumers face a variety of choices that are impacted by policies and regulations, by micro and macro conditions affecting them, and by their individual circumstances and welfare. The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ARE) addresses important issues regarding the management of agricultural and related businesses, the functioning of agricultural markets, the protection and use of resources, the performance of government policies affecting agricultural and related industries, and the impacts of decisions made by consumers with respect to the purchase of food and fiber products. ARE offers undergraduate major and minor programs in agricultural business management and a concentration in biological sciences business management within the agricultural business management program. At the graduate level, the department offers a Master of Science degree in agricultural economics, and a Ph.D. degree in economics. These instructional programs are enriched by faculty members with extension and research activities which contribute to the relevance and thoroughness of the teaching program.

Essential Job Duties: The Lecturer position will teach one section of ARE 495, Veterinary Practice Management, during the fall 2017 semester. The course is designed to support students in the Animal Science major as well as other majors who are interested in careers in veterinary business management and animal care. It will also provide students with a strong educational background in business management that is needed to sit for the Certified Veterinary Practice Manager (CVPM) certification that is offered by the Veterinary Hospital Managers Association (VHMA). Veterinary Practice Management will cover the fundamental management decisions that are made by veterinary practice managers. Some of the skills to be covered in this course include: how to manage, engage, and lead employees, how to keep and interpret business records, how to market the practice, how to negotiate pricing with pharmaceutical and equipment representatives and determine optimal inventory stock levels, how to provide a superior customer service experience in a veterinary setting, and how to balance profitability and patient care. The importance of time management in controlling practice traffic flow along with how to properly leverage paraprofessional staff, such as licensed veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, and customer service representatives, will also be covered. The emphasis will be on the skills that are needed by a veterinary practice manager to run a successful and profitable veterinary hospital. A course field trip to a veterinary practice will also be required. Inclusiveness and diversity are critical to the success of the College and University as a whole. Minimum Education/Experience: Master's degree in a relevant field, with a Certification in Veterinary Practice Management (CVPM).

Department Required Skills: Experience managing a veterinary facility. Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), or a Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris (VMD). Bachelor's degree relative to business management. 5-10 years of experience managing a veterinary facility. Prior teaching experience and course development.
